Hi All,

Just after some information on keeping the number of flies down around my ferret cage.

I have just got a few empty jam jars with lids so i am guessing i can put something in there to get them through a hole and trap them inside.

Would be great to know what to use that wont smell worse than the ferrets!

Take it easy

I have heard that people who reguarly eat marmite get far fewer bites from flies, as the stuff is secreted from your skin via your sweat glands after you have been eating it on a regular basis.

as an experiment it may be worth smearing marmite on the cages to see if this works, however i am not sure if it is the marmite content or the effect that it has on your sweat that puts the flies off.

Take a plastic bottle and cut the top of at the widest part, then inset it back in the bottle so it looks like a funnel pointing down. Now poor some shugar water in the bottle and stand that upright near the ferrets and it will trap the flies for you. You can make a few of them and they will put a good dent in the fly population. Costs nothing and works well.

Simpels.

If my Mrs had anything to do with it they would be heading your way!

Cheers, for some reason i thought i had heard of a vinegar and sugar solution before now?

Given the little buggers some enfoced baths recently, they put up a little fight but love it in the end.

I have another Gill on the way too, Joy!

The marmite idea may work, but you would have to be wealthy! Have you seen the prices of marmite! makes for a better Investment than Gold bullion!!!

Or if your lazy u can buy something called a 'Red-top' fly trap but its pretty much the same idea, sugar water works best but i also find if u pour boiling water over a bit of jam whilst still in glass jar then tip it onto plastic bottle trap once cooled and top with water then that works well.
