Best all rounder

a nick and not kill?? thats a very inhumane statement to make they may well be vermin but it deserves to be put out of its misery quickly and affectively

I did mean that I dont want it to wound the fox I would want it to kill. I dont believe in letting any animal suffering just because its vermin and its my quarry id rather instant kill.

Thanks for the replies folks im just interested to see if there was an all round calibre but it sounds quite touch and go and not definant.

This will open the age old argument. .17hmr I use mine for fox, yes it's on my ticket for fox. I have no problem at 100m, all my shots are taken resting on a fence post.

I have shot plenty of foxes at this range and never had a crawler all clean kill one shot. For rabbit it's perfect at 100m.

I think the issue is can you place the shot. If you can't don't shoot, but thats the same for any gun.

Just a quick question. What would be the best all round calibre for shooting fox and rabbits? Without blowing the rabbit to shite or just giving the fox a nick and not kill.

The Home Office guidance for FEOs states that .22 Hornet and Remington .17 centrefire are the only calibres recommended for both. Ammo is bl**dy pricey tho' so you'd want to handload. ;)

22 Hornet is the only realistic calibre for the role. 17 Rem still annihilates a rabbit, but 22 Hornet doesn't, with the right bullet.

You will need to handload it, but it makes Hornet cheaper than HMR with considerably more capability, so really worth the hassle.
