i was out with the hound yesterday evening when i noticed quite a few rabbits knocking about on the border of one of the wheat fields on my patch so when i got home i called my mate justin to see if he fancied a go at them with his .17 hmr!

we arranged to meet up at the farm at half nine and have a scout round for a fox on the other side of the farm with the .308 first as justin has just bought the kit to start home loading and has a few factory loads he wanted to use up plus by the time we had covered the far side of the farm it would be fully dark giving the rabbits time to get out and start to feed!

so half nine found us setting up in the layby next to the road that divides the farm and after a quick chat to sort out a plan of action off we went, this time of year the maze is getting too high to be able to see anything much but there are still a few rough patches about where the cover is not to high, checking these one after the other we drew a blank on the first sweep, plenty of deer but neither hide nor hair of a fox!

on the way back we parked up overlooking the first rough patch we had checked for a coffee, smoke and to decide where to try next, as we sat there i could see the shadowy forms of deer moving about in the rough and flicked the lamp on to try and find the doe with a fawn following her that we had seen on our way up, sure enough there she was up by the border of the woods staring back at us, then just as i was about to turn the lamp off and head for the clay field i caught a flash of an eye in the long grass about a hundred yard away!

i dont know what made me know it was a fox, it could have been a fawn keeping low in the grass or an adult roe laying up for the night, but just some thing about the sneeky way it moved as soon as the lamp was on it made me think fox, "justin, fox one o'clock starboard bow", "what the f&*k does that mean??", "there's a fox in the grass on our right hand side", i turned the lamp off and waited for justin to get the rifle set up on the bonnet of the landy then had a quick shine round with the lamp and started to squeek!

as soon as i let the first squeek go i could see the the grass twitching as he moved towards us, the odd flash of his eyes reasuring me that we were on for a shot but as he came closer i started to worry he would be in cover right up to the landrover, then suddenly he swung right and came into a patch of short grass not forty yard away from us and i saw he was one of this years cubs!

then........... "stop him" from justin, i barked and he stopped in his tracks CRACK THWOP not a second later and he was dead on the ground!

i picked him up and tucked him under the hedge by a big oak tree and we moved on to the clay field!

nothing showed in the next two fields so we decided to try a field we dont lamp often as one side borders onto the road and the other slopes up to a house, though by driving along parallel too the road the turning round in the coner by the house we can take shots safely enough down into the dip in the field!

again we saw nothing from our "safe" position and drove on down the side of the field that borders onto the garden of the house, by the time we were down in the bottom corner of the field looking diagonally back towards the house we had lost the option of a safe shot and i turned the lamp off hit the lights and started to make our way back towards the road, then about half way up the field justin spotted some thing in the head lights as we went over a bump "what was that? go right" i swung the landy out towards the middle of the field and flicked on the lamp to see fox loping beside us about fifty yards out!

"i cant take a shot from here its not safe, try and get infront of him", we lost sight of the fox as i changed into second and accelerated across the short grass in a race to get to the middle of the field before the fox and with out spooking him, a few moments later and i swung the landy back to the left. stopped and scanned the field with the lamp........................

and there he was, a hundred yards back down the slope of the field broad side on rooting around in the grass with the hedge behind him and nowt but empty fields beyond that, CRACK the .308 spoke again, THWHAP went bullet on flesh and the fox dropped where he stood!

i took his tail off for the pup to play with when i got home then left him in the hedge and we swapped the .308 for the .17 hmr and went to zap some rabbits!
