what do you feed

Recommended Posts

I feed mine on james wellbeloved, doc and meat (usually rabbit).

But I went to Longleat safari park and got talking to the keeper about the ferrets they had, they all looked extremely well.

She said they have stopped feeding them on dry ferret food and have been using dry cat food as they found that the ferrets didn’t do as well on the dry ferret food and did not live as long.

I got a diet sheet off them and once my bag of James wellbeloved runs out I will change to a dry cat food.

I did find it strange that dry ferret food is not as good for them as dry cat food especially when it is nearly 3 times the price but the keeper was sure that the vets had studied the diet of the ferrets for some time and they were really good looking ferrets.

She also said it had nothing to do with the price as they would only give them the best diet.

This is what the diet sheet they gave me says,

80g complete cat biscuit

On alternate days each animal to have:

1* day old chick or 1* 25g piece of fresh meat, both sprinkled with SA37 multivitamins.

Fresh water daily.

I’m going to get the multivitamins and change to the dry cat food as this should work out cheaper and the ferrets should benefit as well.

what dry cat food will you use as i cant get hold of the james wellbeloved anyway

I asked them if any particular cat food is nessesary but they said any complete dry cat food will do, their is alot more choice when it comes to dry at food so i guess it will be down to your preferance.

all ours are fed on raw chicken, liver, heart, rabbit, pidgeon, docs ect better than any dry food if you ask me(you dont get dry food in the wild), as for cat food wouldnt bother is a load of crap ferrets need different vitamins and higher protien levels compaired to cats to stay healthy all it dose is gives them the shats :D

I use dry ferret which i get from my local cow mills suppliers and feed meat as well usually rabbit, pigeon or magpie. All my ferrets have good coats and healthy teeth. i used to feed dry cat food but the ferrets did nt look as good on it as they do dry ferret food

Ferrets need meat protein, alot of cheap cat food contains vegetable protein and ferrets struggle to digest alot of this, it could

result in the ferrets getting bladder stones.

Mine have James welbeloved, alpha, vitalin and whatever other brands they have available.

If you mean they look extremley well by their coat, it might be because they were neutered, their coats look

much healthier if thyeve been done.

Ive been reading a bit since im getting my ferrets soon and read that the dry food has to contain at least 36% protein to be sufficent, also found a company called ALPHA FEEDS that does a dry ferret food so im thinking bout trying them. ;)

The 2 rescue ferrets i have were raised on dry cat food and when i first got them and i was introducing them to ferret food they wouldn't eat it? now i mix the 2 together (dry catfood and dry ferret food)and they seem to enjoy it. i also feed rabbit/squirrel when i have it but have found with the hot weather we've had it stinks and the flies are all over it so have to remove after a few days. I can't remember the name of the dry ferret food at the mo but i know it was really cheap for a huge bag so happy days.
