I was thinking of picking up a cheap crossbow, about quid at the most seen some nice ones i have a real good idea about bows and cross bows but i dont know anyone who baught one of these someone on here must own a cross bow i only want it for a laugh bit of target fun not for hunting its stupid ? show me some pics to of any home made ones too if you got any. they're perfectly legal.can buy them in loads of main street shops etc. just not legal to hunt with them.

owning a crossbow isn't illegal in the UK... its hunting with one thats illegal over here

i found one on the net that fires catupult shot in stead of bolts, does that make it legal to hunt with? is it hunting with bows thats ilegal or hunting with arrows?

Yep, same as compound bows, just illegal to hunt with 'em.

there alright if your only using them for tagret shooting and plinking but hunting with them is illegal.

i had one about 8yrs ago it was a beast and a joy to use, but after while the novety wears off and you get sick of collecting the arrows and after a bit of use the bows become worn,

Those cheap Chinese bows aren't worth a w**k, mate. It'll break in no time and getting spares ain't fun.

 

For anything worth having you're going to be looking at at least £400 and up for a Horton or similar.

 

I've a Barnet Quad 400 and it's bloody stupid! So much power that even the best back-stops don't stop the arrows. Bow clubs hate crossbows, so you can't use them there. You can't hunt with them and each time you lose or damage an arrow, it costs you a fiver.......

 

Not much point unless you've got pots of cash and a huge shooting range to play on.

Edit to say, even with the best crossbows, they are very fragile. Some need new strings or prods after only a few dozen shots.

 

If you want to shoot with a bow, take up archery.
