jigsaw 11,899
out with Samra yesterday for a check on a spot im hoping to ferret next sason. It was very warm,we headed up the hill and the first sight I see is a pair of fox cubs darting down an earth, very interesting mental note made for next year. A little bit sandy and could be deep but we'll see next september.Samra ran a few small rabbits and generally used her nose and had fun.I got to the top of the hill and then i saw the 1 thing I would have preferred not to,MIXY Its been years since I came across it.I took hold of samras collar and walked her slowly towards the stricken rabbit and although its eyes looked bad its hearing was perfectly ok.It rose from its arse and legged it down hill saluki in full flight(as full a flight as a7 month old pup can muster) and picked it like apro, lol.Without hesitation she turned back and retrieved it stright into my hand,RESULT OR WHAT?I know its no big thing for a mixy rabbit to be caught but its agood confidence builder for the pup Samra after her 20 second course, fenn material or what In to the next field and thers another rabbit suffering from the same affliction, whispering to watch up Samra ears cock and she sees her quarry except this bunny is not as badly stricken as the last, both run down the hill and Samra puts in a strike and misses, rabbit turns and up comes the pup,10 feet from the ditch I'm thinking this one is free but as it hits the cover so does the pup and picks th rabbit.very happy I am to say the least. Now shes retrieving like a good un until I hear the thunder of a herd of young cows coming down towards her,Samra panics, drops the rabbit and is the one being coursed across the field, she makes for a gap and in the process is hit by the electric fence and is gone with her tail between her legs. The myxie rabbit resumes its bit for freedom and dissapears into the hedge. So thats two gone, the dog and the rabbit.I found Samra half an hour later and she was feeling very sorry for herself.a bit of TLC and she settled in again but had lot all interest in chasing bunnys,so idecided to head for the sheep farm and do a bit of sheep introduction again,I like to keep toping up her acceptance of the stock. I left it a bit late this year and once the lambs have grown theyre not as welcoming as when younger.Very skitish and nervy but thats a help too as when they bolt about i reckon this should be stimulus enough to make any dodgy dog take chase.Tankfully Samra wouldnt even entertain them steady she stayed All in all she was doing everything a pup should and she marked a few unseen rabbits too, pity about the lecy fence and cattle and droping the rabbit but i'll take atrip back there and see if we can put the afflicted rabbits out of their misery. What arotten disease Hope its not too boring, just heading out for a lookout again this morning, was told of a nice corner with a few rabbits, seeing is believing as they say Edited June 20, 2009 by jigsaw Quote Link to post
Guest lurchers&terriers
good post that pal. Pup seems to be coming on nicely pitty about the fence and the calf's lol. lovely bit of land you have to work im jealous. Im also jealous of that earth. What i would give to have a earth like that to dig. I need to swing from tree to tree like tarzan to get to most of my earths the cover is that thick and the others are rubble or Clay. haa jealousy hay. anyway good luck with the pup pal i look forward to reading your future posts. skycat 6,174
Just shows that in the right hands a Saluki is just as trainable as any other dog: NOTE: in the RIGHT hands and with the right upbringing. Look forward to more on that beautiful pup. Quote Link to post
Hannah4181 260
Great read, it's lovely following a pup's progress. As you've said all the things that happened will only add to her education and make for a better adult dog. She's very pretty aswell ! Edited June 20, 2009 by Hannah4181 Quote Link to post

Malt 379
Nice one Jiggy, the pup's coming on a treat! I went out with mine last night, it had been cloudy all day with a half decent breeze, but by the time it was dark enough, it was as still as anything & cloudless. Coupled with that, the massive herd of nosey young bullocks in the best field, we only saw two fecking rabbits, and they soon legged it! Quote Link to post
