hi there mate.

your dog will naturally just chase anything. and the best way to get them going is to give them easy ones this can mean a few baggers (precaught rabbits) or by taking her out lamping and only letting her run at easy ones i.e squatters or rabbits in the middle of a big field to give her a chance. you also want to make sure the field is a good flat one so that you can always keep the lamp on the rabbit which is obviously a good thing. and it never hurts to run them with another dog. the main thing i think is to keep them confident dont keep running her on something she cant catch as she will lose heart with the job.

hope this helps and goodluck with your dog.

I took my 4 month old jack russel out with my staffy and i would make him sniff around for rabbits in the paddock and she would follow him everywhere watching him and now when i take my jack russel out ( she is 6 months old now) she just does it by herself. So run your dog with another the first couple of times. :)

Firstly, dont go showing her stuff, and to find rabbits sat out in the middle of a field is a big ask...

Make sure you have done all the early training for your pup. Have you had her on the retrieve? Learning her all your commands you want her to understand? BASICS FIRST, sit, stay, here, etc.

Then get your dumby out, spend an hour day throwing it, and retrieving it. Then hide it, get the whippet working the grasses, i know its not a gun dog butit all makes for a good dog.

There no point taking her out on easy game, if it wont come back and chases everything else in the field, running riot, or if it catches the rabbit doesnt retrieve it, or doesnt at least hold it, and plays a game of chase with you!

Whippets are still pretty imature at 7 months old(not saying they arent clever) some take longer than others. You will know when it is ready but 7 mths is to young to start putting droppers out for it!!

Let it play, be a pup, and take it out on normal mooches, it will come across some game, and the rest will take its shape...

Dont Rush it, The easiest way to ruin a dog, especially a whippet is to start it to early, not putting it on stuff it cant catch!

Good luck pal.

P.s, learn it all its commands first, unless you are just walking your dog with another for fun and exercise, this is great for the pup.

Dont work it with another dog till it is obeying you, and understands why it is there.

Then there is no better way to bring a dog on than with another one..

i am only 15 to and dont really know my way around the site yet, so u r not the only one so dont worry :)

i was in a simmilar situation a couple of years ago when i got my first running dog.

i had mine out with an olld feller i know. to start with he would not chase and that can be frustrating! but if this happens dont worry, take her out and let her get used to the feilds she will be working in the day time and meybe let her chase a few. then go out at night and hope that she shows a little bit of intrest! when she catches her first rabbit dont get all exited and run up to her (where i made my mistake! :D ) turn ur lamp off and and turn away and call her name, as if you were calling her to you and when / if she comes take the rabbit off her giving her lots of fuss and meybe a treat. she will then eventually get the hang of it.

Good luck!
