BRINGING ON A YOUNG DOG

Recommended Posts

i started taking my dog out at about 5-6 months just to watch had her out all the time watching, she seemed very keen from biggining when i ran her she was about 10 months but that was to do with a mix up with age thought she was 12 months thats when i heard was best time for dog to start didint do any harm to her caught her first rabbit on first slip think was just luky run had her good nights and bad night but now doing very well at 2 done it all

i think dogs just mature different ages and the key is to not give up on your dog as it will come when there ready

mines comig up 15 month and is still not much cop ,she is constantly trying to stalk rabbits rather than run at them shes had a few now ,but she retrieves to hand is jumping fences etc just this stalking thing is a nightmare her recall is good hopfully she will come good by the new season im going to try her this week end and hopfully finnish on a winnig note and rest her till october ,hopfully the break will do her good

Try short slips for awhile ;)

ive tried everything mate ,had her litterally stoood over a rabbit shaking and waits and waits for it to bolt before striking, mid field rabbits instead of running at them she will creep 200 yards a couple of inches at a time and sit there until it moves its infurating shes caught about 5-6 rabbits and retrieved to hand ,but she has only ever got into 5th gear one night out with a lad of here, the rest of the time you can see shes not really intrested im hoping its a phase but im very dubious at the momment ,hopfully a rest will do her good and renew her prey drive.

How is it Bred,?? did you start her on the lamp 1st or mooching.?? I took Bryn lamping 1st, put him on squatter. Obviously didnt see it, knocked it up for him. And bang his [1st] rabbit, and he as i said gone from Strenght- Strenght. :victory: Try her in sep on the lamp, find some daft easy rabbits

you should be ok once it nails a few. Day time will feck a pup up, unless you go ferret'n.??

shes a 4th generation bull greyhound i bred her out of my dog rio shes double bred to him hence the reduction in size ,i tried her lamping 1st tried her on a easy squatter middle of a large field she just watched run away and half heartly chased it only when it ran ,before this i took her out and she watched rio picking them up easily and occasionaly he will stalk up to them and nik them out of there seat ,but only if there near a hedge if mid field he runs right at them ,dont know if shes picked this up off of him or not ,ive tried her about 20 times now shes still crap im going out with a couple off lads off here tonight so i will see if shes any better tonight.if not may just give her a long break till october

alrite mate, when i first starting taking my young bitch out with other dogs my brothers whippet cought a bunny and brought it back to hand alive he took it off the dog and i wanted to see what mine would make of it ,as he let it go the lamp went off and before we could turn the lamp back on she had it in her mouth bearing in mined she was 5 half month to 6 month old ,now shes about 7 half month old shes had 4 bunnys and very keen now when we go out.I know not to run her to hard at this stage but going out just mooching about helps lot but some dogs take longer than others.
