Advice please

We have lurchers and lurcher breeders in the US but they are still a relatively new phenomenon.

Longdogs and stag hounds breeders are a different story, there are quite a few of them by comparison.

My questions are, what combination, Bedlington/greyhound/whippet/collie etc would some of you recommend for rabbit and the occasional hare.

Here in the south central US, the terrain is not too bad. Nothing like some of the areas I hunted in Canada where I grew up (those cut over cornfields in the winter were like running my labs in a field of daggers).

I was thinking a broken coated dog because we do have moderate cover with a fair variety of stickers.

Speed is not the critical issue; I was looking for a dog that minds fairly well.

There you have it, the typical newbie, wanting the sky and the moon.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Best regards,

Gregg

I’m searching previous threads and acquiring quite a bit of info there as well.

Great list

The best thing I've had for rabbiting was collie/greyhound x whippet/bedlington. A bit of a mix I know but she'd have anything, rabbits, hare, even deer bigger than she was. I've also had deerhound x greyhound which love to chase but seem to lack the finish, a deerhound x greyhound/bedlington which wasn't quite quick enough, and a whippet x lab (an "accident"!) about which I probably don't need to say any more!

Thank you for the advice.

I just started doing some research and the ¾ cross has come up A Lot!

The two breeders I was put in contact with in this country do not breed them or won’t have any collie crosses in the near future. I’ve heard of one dog here from David Hancocks breeding that is a nice Falconry dog and does well with the terriers.

Looking at the different lists, Hancock appears to have a 50/50 approval rating. But everyone that I’ve spoken with that has one of his dogs appears to be quite happy with them.

One breeder that has been nice enough to carry on an email conversation is high on the Bedlingtom/whippet crosses.

Importing is not a problem, dealing long distance is. I’ve contacted a couple over the internet that have “just the dog that I’m looking for†;)

I might have to save some money and make a trip.

Are there breeders that specialize in the collie or bedlington crosses?

Enjoying the research and loving the Plummer books. Dividing the fact from the romance is no problem, been in dogs long enough to tell when he’s waxing nostalgic a bit. and the writing is great.

I really appreciate the help.

Best regards,

Gregg

Something i would never do is buy a dog from a breeder (puppy farmer),its just my opinion, but lets just say 'once bitten twice shy' :good:

Your best bet is to try and get a pup/dog from one of the better known and respected lads on this site. Ok so im not sure how hard it would be to import one like this, but there are some excellent dog lads on here with fantastic dogs.

Mebbes if you put an advert in the classifieds section when you are ready to take on a dog, explaining the situation and the type of dog youre after, one of these lads may get in touch with you??

All the best in finding the right dog anyway mate, :good:

Geordie, Millet,

Sound advice, thank you!

“he's a bit closer to you than we are over here in the UK..â€

If I was the sensitive type, I’d think you didn’t want me over there.

But I’m not.

That’s not what you were implying…was it?

We know some people in the Schutzhund community in England and owning a kennel, my wife hasn’t even had her honeymoon. I thought I could combine the effort. (She understands vacations revolving around dogs; we met on the Schutzhund field where I was working her dog)

My old girl passed (Lab) passed away this week just three months shy of her fifteenth, so another all-rounder is in my near future. She duck, rabbit, coon and squirrel hunted.

Even bayed a hog or two.

Thanks for all the help guys! :signthankspin:

Best regards,

Gregg
