andybrock 2
I’m considering buying an air pistol for dispatching squirrels and mink caught in cage traps. I normally use an air rifle for this but in some situations an air pistol would be more discreet. Does anyone use an air pistol for this and if so which do you use? Cheers Andy Quote Link to post
stubby 175
there are quite a few of the gas cartridge ones available, ratbuster I think one is called, I was going to get one of these types, but eventually opted for a webley spring one, thus not relying on the cartridges Quote Link to post

Matt 160
You don't need a gun to dispatch squirrels, and in fact, if you do a proper risk assessment you shouldn't use one because you will be introducing a new hazard. For mink, unless you are catching hundreds, I would save yer money and continue to use an air rifle. Quote Link to post

Hiya Matt, Thanks for the advise, but surly a pellet to the head is a more humane way to dispatch a squirrel in a cage trap, If it’s done in a controlled way with the squirrel “cornered†with cage trap combs I can’t see what other method would be preferable. Trying to run it into a sack and then clobbering it over the head doesn’t look very professional in my opinion. Cheers Andy Quote Link to post

As a professional, you should always do a risk assessment, and as I've already suggested, you should never introduce a new hazard to a task. Running a squirrel into a bag and dispatching it with a priest is quick, humane, and professional, which is why the FC and DEFRA use it as the preferred method. Wielding a pistol doesn't make the user look more professional, and risks your safety and that of the people around you. Quote Link to post
stubby 175
most of our squirrel jobs are with kania's, but on the odd occassion when we use a live trap, we never do anything on/in the customers property, simple take it inside the back of the van, step inside, close doors and use the pistol, Ive never been a lover of the sack and whack way, as there is no way, you can tell what part of the squirrel your whacking, thus its, whack, is it moving, whack it again, in my eyes, a pellet does the job there and then, humanely Quote Link to post
