Guest Ballach
Cant beleive people are advocating harming a farmers livestock Its no wonder lucher folk get a bad rep! I think you should do as advised and keep your dogs on a lead, its not worth getting on the wrong side of the farmer who would be well within his rights to shoot your dog if he thought it was worrying his livestock. BLACKBOB 9
they can only shoot dogs for worrying if thy cant stop them any other way This is rubbish they can shoot any animals which are deemed to be worrying stock. They have nothing to prove and i aint known any farmer even attempt to catch a dog worrying his stock. Its up to you to prove the farmer was wrong and never heard of a farmer looseing in court If your dogs not undercontrol and wonders off towards stock even if the dogs bombproof you risk the chance of it being shot. Why would anyone who has been told by the farmer want to take a risk with their dogs keep them on a lead until you get on to your land. Even if he is a fruit cake with a gun Quote Link to post

thumbless 0
I have 4 Border Collies. The cows are now out of the field in question and moved to new pasture. Lets say i have other issues with the farmer. He is not getting his own way . Quote Link to post
littlefish 585
A quote from my local council booklet on responsible dog ownership: Farmer's rights "The law presently states that if a dog is found unaccompanied in a field with livestock and without the landowner's consent, farmers are legally protected in shooting the dog on the spot. Likewise, if all reasonable attempts to restrain the dog have been taken the farmer is equally justified in shooting the dog." Sounds pretty much in favour of the farmer. I doubt any farmer is going to try to lassoo a loose dog if he can stop it with a gun. By the sounds of this I would be worried about more than a dog getting shot. He dosen't sound like a good neighbour. Quote Link to post
lucky 578
he sounds like a right old b*****d to me, but your better off keeping them on the lead just incase Quote Link to post
thumbless 0
Some body else bought land off him and had a lot of problems with him. I have accces to my plot through his and its in black and white so there is nothing he can do about it. the dogs are Border collies and are used to sheep and cattle, they love to rake but the only thing they would catch is a Mixy rabbit. Quote Link to post
HBG 350
The local copper lives less than half a mile from the field in question, The Scottish Electricity board are frightend of him cause he threatend them with a gun, he cut down a timber electricity pole on his land, heard a roumer that he threatend kids with a gun for being on his land, i think if this was all true he would'nt have a licence to keep a gun(something would of been done) Quote Link to post
Guest Ballach
It sounds like you have allready decided that you are going to let your 4 border collies run loose off the lead through his field so why bother asking for advice? If hes a fruit cake with a gun that should give you even more reason to want to put them on leads so he doesnt have any excuse to complain or worse shoot your dogs. If you have to share that bit of track why not just put them on leads is it that hard to do? maybe the guy has cows in calf and doesnt want them being disturbed by dogs chasing rabbits. you have to respect the guys viewpoint if you want to try and get along for the sake of keeping the peace. thats what I would do anyway. it dont hurt them to be on a lead for a short while and you said they have 8 acres of your land to run on so why not run them on there he cant shoot your dogs if they are on your land can he? thumbless 0
Just wanted to see the reaction as most of you have dogs in here. From now on i will keep them on the lead as i am leaving my self wide open. Earlier in the year a vet came to de-horn one of my cattle, he did not know where the entrance to the field was and asked a lady near by. He was told if he went on his land he would be shot, eg stray from the road/duirt track. Lets say i am treading carefully i am asking your opinion and i am also looking up the conditions for getting a FCC and they are very tight, if he carries on in this manner i wil be seing about getting his gun removed. Have learned a lot in here and its a good forum. Some of it could be gossip. Quote Link to post
