Youngest you have seen

Recommended Posts

Wats the youngest you have seen a terrier start and did they go the distance after it or did they fail. Am asking this cause we always have arguements over this topic, some say dont show them anything until they are around two and then lay off with a very light season others reackon a terrier should be working at two, just looking for everyones views.

just my own opinion but to me at 5/6 mth old and allowed to enter is too young, im talking adult quarry, a fox can bolt whilst netting up before a terrier is put to ground, a quick bolt doesnt mean its worked it, i do let my pups have a look around 8/9 mth at the end of digs but dont allow them very close contact, then ile hold them back till around 13/14mth mark if i think there ready, then ile let them have a easy doo, then if im happy with them then its there chance after that to do the job i ask from them, (find and stay) to them that start them young ATB

I can't condone any one working a pup of 5-6 months old, entering yes but not working. Let me explain , i often fetch back carcasses for my pups to see and if their age to enter doesn't fall in to the hunting season then i will find fresh road kill and bring that back !!. This may sound stupid but the hole exercise is to get your pup in his hot blood and to en-grain the scent of your chosen quarry. Believe me it works, when you're got a terrier necklace hanging of Charlie in the back yard your pups will want to play and they WILL remember then it's just a case of letting your pup mature enough to enter MENTALLY not physically which will be different in every pup, experience will tell you when they are ready, generally speaking from 14-18 months.

Seen a man enter a terrier at 6 months once. This terrier worked 'till the day it died. He shot it at 9 months when it came away.

thats were he should of held it back that what i did with my pup sat tied to a tree on three digs listen to her mother and only once let her ragg the qurry when she found and killed that cub at 9 months she probly didnt see or felt what that mans dog did but this season i see what she made of ;)

yeah thats my thinking aswell.I have an 11 month old bitch and we had a handy dig but we had a bolt at the end of dig, due to a mistake the lad didnt get the spade down to block in charlie and he bolted once the terrier was lifted out but my wee bitch was straight in. I know it was an empty deadend but she ran the burra then after it, i was just happy that she was showing interest like but she wont be near a set again until round christmas then hopefully i can give her a handy couple before the season ends and then fingers crossed the following season she will be ready to go.
