So what would be the best rifle to start off with on around about a 400/500 quid budget ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Let me be the first to say CZ 452 in what ever variant you fancy the look/feel of. 16" barrel witha SAK mod is the way to go - then spend your change (and a bit if you can) on a scope

looks like a decent rifle might have a better look into this

I've got the CZ Style (Black synthetic stock with nickel finish barrel and action) and it shoots very well, is well built for the price and looks good too! If you prefer a wood stock then there are a few to choose from

amen brother! the cz 452 in synthetic stock is awesome, durable, weather prog etc, spend a decent about of money on a good illuminated scope if you wanna go lamping.

CZ, in .22 lr, cut your teeth on it , cheap cheerfull, and accurate, no better rifle to learn to shoot..........

Don't 'shoot' me down with this question (I don't know too much about 'REAL' rifles), would this particular gun be powerful enough to kill a deer? I too will be wanting to purchase something in the future within the same price range.

the simple answer is yes if placed in the correct place but i very much doubt you could find anyone on here who would condone it. i have a .17hmr and a .243. one is a rimfire the other a centrefire. in lehmans terms to put it into perspective the .17hmr has around 245ft/lbs of power and the .243 has around 2000. its also not legal to shoot deer with anything less than a calibre of .240 unless shooting muntjac or CWD in England where .22 centrefire is acceptable. if you want to shoot deer then a rimfire is no good for you.

Excellent, thanks for the reply. I will of course seek the advice from my local gun shop before I buy anything. As I said above I don’t know too much about these type of guns, but you always learn on this site.

 

I shot my 1st buck last week in Scotland (I will post pics later), think we were using a 270!!!!! (Bullet that is). The game keeper on the estate was with me throughout so loaded the gun etc.

no worries matey, make sure you do some research before taking the plunge. the last thing you want to do is end up with a rifle you don't want. you'll be suprised how much you learn just from this site.
