nice evenings stalk

Recommended Posts

as it was a really nice sunny evening i decided to go for a stalk. throughout the week i had been thinking about a stalk that i could do that would be focused on field edges as this is where the deer seem to be showing themselves at the minute. stuffing thereselves with lush grass.

i decided to take a route through an area of my permission that i had never stalked before so had no idea what i may find. within five minutes of starting i could see two deer in the distance so i stalked closer and saw that it was a two does one of which had a kid next to her in the long grass. i decided at this point that whatever the outcome it had been well worth it because it was lovely to see the doe with a kid.

but anyway i carried on constantly scanning the area with my binos but didnt see anything other than the backend of a fox getting to cover before i could get a shot at him. at the end of my stalk i decided that i would take a detour and just check out a large field that had been cut the week before not realy expecting to see anything but you never no... i poked my head over the bank and saw nothing so i stood up in the corner of my eye i noticed a bit of movement which i quickly realised was a big buck not 40 yards away from eating grass in a small dip in the field amazingly he hadnt noticed me so i set the rifle up on the bipod and fired putting a perfectly placed bullet behind the front leg the buck dropped instantly dropping out of sight but all i could hear was him thrashing in the long grass so i gave him 5 minutes and walked over. it turned out to be an old buck but none the less very big for this area. i think that if i had got to him whilst he was in his prime he would have been something very special. but none the less it was a great evening and a nice trophy. and very lucky that i took that detour.

hopefully this pic will work

cheers all he did have an acceptionally large head for my area and good colour which would suggest he had been clean for a while however there where a few strands left in between a few bits of pearling. he also had a weird shape head almost like a v as the antlers had no curve to them.
