If anybodys dog gets shot for worrying livestock the owner of the dog should be shot as well for not training it properly. It tended to be the old school type keepers or farmers that used to be bad for shooting dogs belonging to tresspasers now days i dont think they need the hassel.atvb
unless the dog is also trained to take anything its told on comaned,

about 20 years ago we were mooching about looking for warrens to ferret

behind the big local quarry ,i had my 7yr old jack russle and my pal had his 4month old lurcher pup.

there was nothing in the feild we were in ,but sheep in the next feild we were passing.

my pal had his pup on the lead, and it was yapping at the sheep.

my jrt was fine round livestock and walked to heal as usual.

next thing this farmer came running towards us with his 12 bore shouting and waving the gun around,it frightend the shit out of us.

my dog started to bark at him trying to protect us

and he shot my dog dead like it was nothing

right in front of us.

we wernt even in the same feild as the sheep never mind dog chasing!!

needless to say i was absolutly devastated.

when we went to the police they couldnt do anything because it was his land.

turned out that one night he lost alot of sheep to the quarry and blamed it on dogs..

like theres no way it could be one of the many foxes that lived around the quarry :wallbash: .

tho it didnt bring my dog back

the farmer got pay back in many ways for quite a few years later.

lofti.

thanks for replying, but alot of you are talking about dogs being shot for interfering with livestock, that wasnt really my point, although still intresting,a keeper i know through other avenues tells me he gets lads on his land after bigger stuff than rabbits, and he shoots the dogs to this day,and i just wondered if it was true or was he lifting my leg abit, thanks jamie,

when i helped out on an estate the headkeeper carried some wool in his pocket if he saw any dog loose he would shoot it stuff wool in its mouth and say it was a stock worrying he also made underkeepers do same when i refused we parted company his veiw was the only good lurcher was a dead lurcher he was a ruthless man of the old school that im glad to say is slowly being replaced by the new generation keepers that understand the usefullness of lurchers

of course lurchers should not attack sheep but for a farmer to shoot a dog thats lamping - even big stuff is cowardly - the dog doesnt know if hes on permission or not - if youve a shotgun in hand have the balls to confront whoever slipped the dog !

the hounds broke on a fox that slipped out that no one seen 2 years ago they went on ground we had no permission for despite our efferts to stop them a farmer shot 2 they were not in any feilds with live stock and the police told us they could do nothing i would like to have seen there reaction if i had shot a sheep or somthing by accident

I think some people are to trigger happy farmers included. Some people should be allowed guns others should not.If someone shot my dog they had better run pretty fast cos id fecking kill them.Years ago a friends dog was caught killing a sheep and the farmer was brilliant about it she padi him what he thought it was worth and a wee bit extra gave her apologies and that was that.He legally could have shot the dog and still had her done but nope just wanted recompense to replace the sheep
