squeeking hares in

its easier in the summer the squeeking mimicks the leverets in distress

 

and the older ones come to investigate

that makes sense to me riohog but i was doing it in febuary and not many leverets about that time of year i also had them come from a couple of fields away

 

 

you can do it any time pal i always found it earier when the days are long

 

 

How do you squeek em riohog, ? a noise made how ?

I aint trying to be a smart ass mate, cos i know jack sh*t on the subject, but i dont think you can call hares by imitating a rabbit squeel,

 

if you could, we'd all be at it, and i've never seen it first hand, and i've known some good country men.

I've got some permission that you just cannot squeek up Charlie without the 'Puss' coming in,and,it happens year round.................Martin.

I get hares coming regularly, there are good numbers on some of my ground, but i keep them safe, plus i dont have the dogs for em, but when squeeking for foxes always have hares come in, also had roe and rabbits come... i put it down to curiosity, or them wanting to know where the predator(fox) is making a kill ??

HHmm....Such a mysterious subject!

I have tried a good many times to sqeak them in but have never had any even approach. But maybe i didnt get the pitch correct or anything like that. I tried and i tried, mainly for photographic purposes, but now i have given up and, if the mountain won't go to mohammed........

I had to polish up my stalking skills instead!!lol

 

But, there is one thing i do remember. many years ago, when i was a young lad i used to occasionally fracture the law, especially at night being a bad boy with nocturnal game birds To do the evergreens i had sellotaped a torch to my scopes and away i went. However, once these conifers were done i moved onto the deciduous larches. here i didnt need a torch and so i sat just in the wood and pulled the sellotape off the torch/scope.This made quite a noise and low and behold a hare came running full belt right into the sheepwire next to me, closely followed by another one. I mean they bounced off it such was their velocity. I always wondered if that noise had an effect on them?? God knows eh? JD

ive lost count how many times ive squeeked hares in,some deliberatley and some while squeeking charlie

I call in quite a few hares during the day and night. We ended up catching 11 of them a couple of weeks ago using that method. I call coyotes for a living, using rabbit distress sounds from a handcall. I actually build custom hand calls. After seeing a pattern of calling in a mess of hares, I finally got the ideas to build a drop-door box for the dogs and try lamping. That's the tactic we are using.

 

If anyone is interested, I can hook them up with some easy to use and great sounding hare distress calls.

Pre-ban, for anyone who was out after foxes a great deal, found hares a pain in the arse coming into a call.

 

With the beam hitting it, it would grab a dogs attention and cause a dog to miss seeing the fox creeping up behind it :realmad:. It was a very expierienced dog that would ignore the hare and look beyond to the fox.

Its mainly a summer time thing, an old guy showed me how to do it with a blade of grass stretched between your thumbs and then blow gently between them. Stand still and you can get them to within 6 feet of you, done it dozens of times.
