Guest joe ox
Tales told by men of dubious character I take with a pinch of salt, has anyone actually witnessed 1 dog take 100 rabbits by candlepower? Quote Link to post
FUJI 17,288
i remember a lot of talk about tommy mcphee back in the late 80s and early 90s i heard from more than one source he kept some very handy lamp dogs and he would punish them hard with a lot of running as caithness was heavy populated with rabbits at the time. it would just be good to know if it was wifes tales or truth thats all. That was the reason i first asked the question SBBR ,it was BIG news back then, would be nice to know if there was any truth in it? I have spoken to Tommy in the past (around that time) albeit by telephone about some pups he had and he did tell me back then that he did do it on more than one occasion, whether he was truthful or not i don't really know but he seemed a decent fella so i have no real reason to disbelieve him. .All the best PP. And most of his lamping dogs only lasted 2 seasons, and they were fecked then. Even if they were a good line, with [stamina+Agilty], 50-60 rabbits with one dog ,it could be done. But hit the Ton with one dog, i dont think so. And unless you have market for that many rabbits, why feckin bother.??? Most game dealers want clean rabbits from [gun or ferret] , when a dog as to work that hard , they can get hard mouthed and who can blame them . If i get a dozen , and a run on old red coat i am happy Quote Link to post

I'm not so sure? I'm like yourself nowadays,a nice few bunnies and i'm happy but back 20+ years ago it seemed the norm to try for such feats and i was no different Quote Link to post
