Cant imagine a pure ridgeback being able to catch a fox, unless the fox was old or hurt in someway?

You could not be further from the truth. they are quick enough for them in a big place or spring them from a seat in the long grass. A good friend of mine has a male I got for him from show home he had it out yesterday afternoon got several large fast types and a fox.

It is very easy to knock what you know nothing about.

Im not knocking the breed mate, just find it hard to believe that a big lump of a dog like that could course a fox with any sort of success rate.

Ok it may be able to catch a few in the rough cover but as i say i cant see it lasting a very long course on your average fit fox.

Ive seen some good lurchers get spun inside out by a clever fox.

As ever i stand to be corrected though???? ;)

Also the White English men that went to south africa took the beasts on as guard dogs,They got a single black man to beat the dogs with a stick so the dog's would hate black people It was forced into the dogs and i can tell you that they never forgot,My ridgeback is a big old b*****d that hate's Colored people and also chased a horse in a field and tried taking it down.Serious dogs with some good speed and stamina. Not to be under-estimated.

Well id love to see one taking game,i dont doubt their prey drive or stamina, just find it hard to believe that they would be any good for any thing other than big stuff? Cant see them being an all round type even on pre-ban stuff?

The Rhodesian Ridgeback standard calls for a dog capable of great endurance with a fair turn of speed. It is a relatively new breed (breed standard only drawn up in 1926) and still has great diversity of type.

I've had RRs since 1984 and currently have 6. I have known of RRs that have been very successful hunters and others that have very little hunting instinct. Some are very easy to train - others rather less so. I have just imported a young dog - he is a hunter and is pretty quick considering he already weighs about 45 kg and is not quite a year old. He is really willing to please and I'm going to have a go at competitive obedience with him (that'll give everyone a laugh!)

You are correct in one respect donk ridgebacks are not sight hounds and do not posess the blistering speed of a good staghound, They are in fact an african cur dog, just like the americian cur or the australian cattle dog they posess good garding instinct for the home and stock from predition as well as good hunting instinct with the ability to hunt by both nose as well as sight. no if I was after a dog to lamp foxes the way you do over their then I would go for staghound or some other purpose breed foxdog. but for us out here where our hunting is done from vehicle or on foot and the dogs are expected to hunt up the fox run it down and dispatch the fox then the ridgeback can and does fill its place on the hunt. I myself run the ridgebacks that I own with a staghound we catch plenty of foxes thanks very much and rarely need the use of a shot gun. our hunting grounds can be from a 300 acre paddock to a couple of sq klms. The ridgeback/greyhounds shown on this thread could only be an asset to any hunt.

They should make a decent cross then, cant say ive ever seen any work, but i would definitely be interested in watching them work. Wonder how they would compare to a bull x?

Ive seen some clips on youtube and they certainly have enough heart for the job on big stuff.

All the best mate :victory:
