im new to the world of lurchers and im keen on getting my first pup this year but im unsure on what cross i should go for, I am looking for a all rounder that isnt too big and can work and live around my terriers. rabbits will be the main quarry but when the ban is lifted i would require it to work fox. i would be very graitful of some advice on the subject.

Try a wheaton/greyhound or a bedlington/greyhound mate, these crosses will be fairly handy at hheir work. B.M

i like the sound of the bedligton x as there fairly game sought, would a dash of whippet keep the size down as i only whant something around 23inches

i say a collie 1st cross for your first dog fella ;)

I would not say 1x, to much collie for his 1st lurcher :wallbash: A 1/4 is plenty to whippetxgrey. Ive got a 1x collie grey , he can :wallbash: at times, and ive had lurchers 25 years. They are good dogs, but not for your 1st lurcher. :hmm:

Bryn my 1x collie grey

Would agree with you totally Bird, first cross collie's are never a good choice for a first Lurcher, unless the person has sound dog training expierience. Seen plenty ruined through poor training as their owners failed to 'harness' typical collie traits.

I always wince when folk put up posts asking others about what they should go for, most ain't got a clue as to what they will be hunting next week never mind next season.

My two penneth would be this, for what its worth....

For a first Lurcher go for sommat of medium size 23"- 25", bettering the odds of differing graft.

Nowt wrong with a good drop of collie, though look toward the faster 'up an at 'em' types, the terrier crosses and the old type bitza's with a good dash of deerhound, usually fall into this category.

Ensure whatever cross it's got plenty of sighthound blood through its veins, as speed, a begginer needs aplenty!

Try to see BOTH parents and find out, pref first hand, what they are capable of.

Pick a physically sound pup and give it all the TLC and expierience you can ever manage..... the rewards will be great!!!

Simples.... ;)

Best of luck.

Oh, and nice photo's Bird :good:
