Matt 160
A fake nest usually works, although it is a little late in the year to start using a larsen. Using a mirror is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. The first rule of trapping is to make sure you are familiar with the relevant laws. Try doing a search on 'magpie' in this section; you will find lots of posts about trapping them. Quote Link to post
stubby 175
in answer to your question, yes you make the nest inside the larsen trap, in the side that you would normally keep the call bird, door shut, that way, the maggies will jump into the "catch" part trying to get to the nest, if the perch is whats holding the spring doors open, make sure you set it really fine once you have caught a call bird, you must, again by law, make sure it has food, water and shelter, checking daily Quote Link to post

jay_h 2
i once found a larsen trap with one dead magpie and another that was in bad condition and in each section was a foil pie tray so i would say they work as this person had two in his trap. cheers, jay. Quote Link to post
zig zag wanderer 0
I don't believe using a mirror would be illegal for the purposes of reflecting the bird's image as used in a Larsen. It would only be illegal if used to dazzle which is clearly not the case here. Quote Link to post

It would only be illegal if used to dazzle which is clearly not the case here. We did this one to death in this thread....... I think the law is quite clear. As I've already said, anyone who is taking up trapping should familiarise themselves with the law first. The exact wording of the W&C Act can be found HERE. Quote Link to post
zig zag wanderer 0
I agree Matt, the law is quite clear. The mirror in this application is not used for dazzling so would be perfectly legal. The aim of W&C Act regarding dazzling is to prevent the disabling/distracting of the birds to fascilitate capture or killing. Quote Link to post
