good read makes alot of sence ye its not that easy to find the right type

look back to the early collie xs smithfields they were droving dogs (cattle dogs) hardy rough coated types pehaps ebit more guts about them to be able to boss the cattle pehaps made a better kind of lurcher rather than the (sheep dog) collie

Yep, riohog, some of the earliest writings of Lurcher production mention the 'legendary' Smithfield collie, the supposed 'ultimate' in Lurcher production but the more I think about it, though I don't doubt Smithfields were the choice of some, by their work they would have passed through many a Shire, where their qualities were well known but just because 'they' were written about and lets face it, Lurchers in print was a pretty rare thing back then, who knows how widespred that cross was?

I'll bet that the Smithfield type didn't suit all, just as today, we all have different opinions of what type we like.

I'm still sticking to my thoughts, Lurcher production was done in different parts of the country using different crosses, of all sorts.

Different areas would produce different Lurchers dependent on what was available and what tasks were required.

Anyways, to long ago to matter any now, enjoy your Lurchers of any type, for we are all a long time dead!!!

As Stabs put it, if it does the job of a Lurcher then it is a Lurcher. ;)
