borntoshoot 1 Posted June 9, 2009 Report Share Posted June 9, 2009 hi all. im new to ferreting and getting a couple in 2 weeks from my tutor at college and i was wondering if i need to egt them vaccinated or just take the risk, i will get flea and tick treatment for them but is it worth the costs of injections and roughly how much will they cost? i have a terrior but he will be kept away from them and hes completely up to date with flea,tick and injections. what do you all think i should do. i cant really afford vaccinations at the moment so is it worth taking the risk or not? atb. borntoshoot Quote Link to post

( and can happen twice !! = £60) or get her spayed only you can put a price on your ferrets health there are loads of people i know who don't get then vaccinated & i know some who do, ferrets can get all sorts of ailments & if money is short i would make sure you have a stash pot for emergency vets treatment, put a couple of quid or whatever you can afford away each week just in case, not trying to put you off but you never know. as for your conversion i hope you got god diy skills unlike me as i am hopeless, all the best with your new ferrets just handle them regularly & be patient as kits will test anything with their teeth once you got them settled they are entertaining, & should make good workers try & give them as much space as you can because they get bored easily & are very good escape artists ( i lost my hob when i was 15 he chewed through my very small hutch only to find him 2 days later asleep in my dads motorbike helmet in the shed) atb john Edited June 9, 2009 by johnmac666 Quote Link to post

solostoke 1 Posted June 10, 2009 Report Share Posted June 10, 2009 i get mine vaccinated against distemper for £5 a ferret, just wait until you see a vets offering a cheap deal on dogs/cats then ring up and they will normally do a couple of ferrets for the same price show us the hutch once converted, atb Quote Link to post

jultaylor1972 2 Posted June 11, 2009 Report Share Posted June 11, 2009 I have never had any of mine vaccinated but I do know of someone near me who lost a great working ferret to distemper. Im sure there is no 'registered' vaccination for vets to use - but I could be wrong? Just make sure they have adequate housing, fresh meat and water for the basics - lots of handling as an extra. Ive had mine for nearly 3 years now and cant imagine life without them. Roll on October!!! Quote Link to post
Funfuret 1 Posted June 12, 2009 Report Share Posted June 12, 2009 There's no licensed distemper vaccine for ferrets in the UK but very few of the medications that are used in ferrets are specifically licensed for ferrets. Vets use the dog canine distemper vaccines to vaccinate ferrets under a legally acceptable system of prescribing called the vet prescribing cascade. Under that system, they can prescribe a drug that isn't licensed for an animal so long as it is applied by the licensed route for the licensed condition, and they have no reason to believe it might not be safe in that animal. All of mine are annually vaccinated using a part vial of the dog vaccine Nobivac DHPPi. Quote Link to post
The one 8,477 Posted June 12, 2009 Report Share Posted June 12, 2009 The thing i dont like is the dry weather if its pissing down i reckon it washes all the dieases away from the lamp posts ect where i think they build up and your dog etc sniffing about will bring them home Instead of vacinating my ferret's i walk my dogs out the road and wash round the ferret hutch with bleach rather than pumping the ferrets full of chemicails they dont need Quote Link to post
