How "flat" is the .17hmr

Recommended Posts

Not sure if this should go in the general talk bit, but feel free to move it if it is.

I was in the gunshop this morning and couldnt help but over hear one fellas' claim about his .17hrm. Now, i know the .17hmr is a flat lil round but this was bit extortionate claim, he claimed that the .17hmr is soo flat that when taking a "long shot" he has to adjust for ...wait for it.....THE CURVATURE OF THE EARTH, and he has to aim below where he want to hit.

I mean im no expert of the .17hmr, not really a fan (i know, sacralidge) but this seems quite far fetched.

some people make you laugh.

Absolut bollox, a round would have to travel about 500miles before its trajectory was needed to change due to the circumference of the planet

No way near 500 miles, but a hell of a lot further than a HMR can shoot.

:clapper::clapper: per: :clapper::clapper::clapper::clapper::clapper::clapper::clapper::clapper::clapper::clapper::clapper::clapper::clapper:

I'm sure he's confused that with "gravity" :clapper::clapper::clapper:;)

..and kinetic energy, hang on, I'll get me book of quantum mechanics out!

well, the horizon is what 3miles for a 6ft man. so a rabbit standing up is what 1ft high so, 3miles devied by 6 = 1/2 a mile. and thats presuming that the barrel is on the floor. so, yeah, quite a shot.

lol, i think your right, gravity, that new fangle thing.

the .17 hmr is indeed a flat shooting rimfire round but the say he has to take in the curvature of the earth is for want of a better word complete bollox....

With a 100 yard zero the .17g bullet will drop nearly 9" at 200 yards and nearly 3 feet at 300 yrd's, now at the 1500 yard to 2000 yard mark then the earths curve starts to take effect but not to a large extent.....

even with a zero of 150 yards the .17g bullet will drop 30" + at 300 yards.....

So just let him keep talking nonsense....... he's on what i call an ego trip...... ;)

Sorry mate, but that book ain't gunna help you. Quantum mechanics is about atomic particles and how they bump into eachother.

Sorry....i hadnt bigged myself up latley.

I regulary take shots on bunnies out to 1000 yards and the HMR works fine  I just aim above the tips of their ears to allow for elevation.

I must admit though, when im hunting mammoths and dodos I do keep the range down to under 800 yards though.

Well thats more than reasonable. lol :clapper:

..so a HMR bullet and the air it's travelling through are not made of particles? :tongue2: If we're going to take into account the Earth's curvature, we might as well go the whole hog!:laugh:

Loud mouthed ignorant dickhead. Next thing will be some twat claiming that the curvature of space in the region of large masses explains why he can't find his prick with a telescope. Ho Hum it is to laugh. . . .
