JPTfellterrier 65
net is the best....i have also heard that if you put a line, washing line cord for example, round the edge with pegs about the height of half of the herons lower leg the heron cant step over, dont know if it works Quote Link to post
Bosun11 537
I've been cleaned out over the past few years too, was recommended a plastic Eagle Owl, about 12 months ago, rather than the Heron and.... So far so good (i know i'm tempting fate by writing this!!) Had all the advice to net over the pond but for me its a garden feature, the fish are secondary, so i'll see how the owl gets on and if the flying fecker makes another raid, it's back to the shop for more cheap fish... My dads old pond was netted and it ruined the whole look for me, though he did have some expensive fish. Oh yer, I have heared that putting a 'pergola' over a pond can deter Herons, due to the fact that to make a sharp exit they must take off practically vertical, the pergola prevents 'em doing this and so they will not take from a 'roofed' pond???? Mattventon 1
As already mentioned, put a small wall around your pond, this prevents the heron from getting close enough to it to fish. Herons like to stand at the edge of the pond to fish. I had the same problem in my pond so I put some big rocks around it and it seems to work, also it doesn't ruin the looks of your pond. The heron's still about, fishing in neighbour's gardens but has left ours alone now. Quote Link to post
Bosun11 537
Mine has a small wall around it and it stopped nothing!! Quote Link to post
a*beater 0
try a dummy heron and put a couple pieces of string around the pond about half a metre high at the most and if that dont work well then you have the choice of putting netting up or shooting the bas**rd Quote Link to post
