hi all

does anyone know how to keep herons away from your garden/pond

we've had one in ours helping itself to our goldfish got two left out of fifteen

want to get rid of it before buying more fish

Net it over...........had to do it with mine. It's about the only sure fire method.......well apart from one other.......but that's against the law

proofing of the pond with netting or overhead wires is the most effective long term measure.

 

this species must not be shot except in extreme circumstances and then only after consultation with, and the issue of a license by, the relevent agriculture department, licenses are issued on the basis of reinforcing scaring measures, not reducing local populations

A cover is the best way to go, they still come & check out if you've left it off though

didn't really want to cover with net or mesh but looks like i'm going to have to if its the only way hopefully its had its fill and stays away

i actually like watching them from the back garden fish on the river bank where i live but cant afford to keep restocking the pond to to watch it feeding on my fish, thought there might have been a way to scare or discourage him

You can get something with a motion sensor that sits on the end of your hose. The bird sets it off, and gets a blast of water.

we had a problem with a heron so i went out and bought a plastic heron and put it near the pond and it hasnt been back since which is gd as it took alot of goldfish and some of our smaller carp

we had one, put a fake one out and it didnt come back, they are territorial. Another way would be to build a wall round your pond, as a heron will not go to a pond it cannot walk in and out.

Not entirely true mate .Mine is 3 bricks high and now empty but the culprit had a shock when the dog got him .

A dummy heron or string across the pond stops them stalking up to the pond apperntly

over here its easy 12 Gauge Feckes them up and they don't come back :-}}}}}
