Carrying shot rabbits? and first succesful outing

Recommended Posts

OK here's the deal, I finally got round to making some sitting height shooting sticks for use w. my HMR. put the sticks up, rest the rifle in and rest the butt on your knee and it's as steady as a rock! lets you get above the grass and crops much better. anyhow, i just went out for a couple of hours and shot 10 bunnies, only 7 of eating size and I couldn't find one 'cause it was almost dark, (bet charlie had a good meal :D ) anyhow, how do all you guys carry shot rabbits? I just used a stick and hocked the bunnies and threaded them on that so that it balanced, but after carrying 2,3,4,5,6 rabbits for a couple of hours, my arm was practically being pulled off!

Here's the dilemma, I know that gutting them will make them a WHOLE lot lighter, but I don't want to be getting blood all over my rifle so short of pushing a wheel barrow through the field, how do you guys carry bunnies on foot? (I'm a lone ranger btw and don't shoot/lamp with anyone else....)

Cheers :D

Game bag mate. I shoot some, take them back to the car usually, then set off again, or if im going in one direction and coming back the same way i will sit them on walls where i remember they will be and i know i will pass.

I carry loops of bailer band ( cut a 14 inch length, double it then knot it to make a loop ) put the back legs through the loop twist it and legs back through again then the end through the back legs and that holds them, I can get 4 or 5 on one bit, then I put the button of my army surplus jacket pocket through the loop and do it up and away i go, they do bang on your legs a bit but as long as your not walking miles its bearable. It also leaves your hands free.

Having said that tonight I chucked mine in a hedgerow and walked back for the car :D:D

sweet! cheers guys! also do you tend to gut them when you shoot them or later at the car?

hmmm, seat belt or bag it is then... though I'm not willing to sacrifice in car safety for rabbit carrying ATM :D

what about a rucksack, as with a big 14 Ah 12v battery them things don't half weigh a ton!

dont use a rucksack as the rabbits wont be able to coll and theyll go green on the meat, also they want gutting as soon as possible or maybe up to an hour or less after shot or if this does not happen the meat will be tainted

having a rucksack on is a right pain in the arse when shouldering a rifle as well, dont advise it myself.

I hate the flees so I have a roll of small plastic bags and bag them up singley then leave them where I can find them on the walk back, to the car.

They then go in a larger bin bag together in my game bag.
