i am just wanting a bit of advice i took my terrier out today and i let her off and she just started running so i shouted her back but no look so i started running after her and i caught her but she still didnt listen to me but when i am working her and let her off shes different dog again any ideas lads

well you could try leting her off in a inclsed space like a fenced off feild so she cart go any where when she runs off and you can try working with her.....

for this you'll need is a fencing steak and a LONG lead:

 

tie the dog to the fence and let her go...if she runs recall her and if she doesnt stop, the fencing steak will stop her....

 

repeat this (but not too much) untilo she starts to listen.

 

when she starts to listen then start praising her with treats and the eventually with your voice..(some say high pitched voice is more praisable) and eventually this should eb successful....if not, you've gone one stubborn dog! but as people say dont knock the dog till you see it work.....

I think fact remains that majority of Patts will go if they get onto something.

Be it rabbit, fox, cat or anything else.

my 2 patts can be obedient for days on end then all of a sudden they go.keep them coupled most of the time as i get pissed of searching or waiting by a hole for hours on end.the youngest who is 18 months will go in anywhere.she is small and can fit in holes you would not think.looking forward to the winter because i think she will give us some good times.cheers mouse

Hey new here. Saw the post. Most of my Glens will come if they can see me. Seems they go deaft if they can't see me. Same as my ole border, Turn a corner and bam no ears. I took them out into a tall grassed feild and let them run ahead then I jumped into the grass off the trail and layed down and waited for them. As soon as they saw I was not following them they came looking for me! A couple of these and they always make sure where I am.

Now heck keep them on a lead when hunting or if not then it is a running you go.

We started something to get people into hunting their dogs. We are calling it "strong dog" When the dogs gather and the people see what the heck the have the level of excitment goes though the roof. Then the hunting storys start. Sure the anti's are always near and wacthing. We are only using scent, but they are still wacthing. Must be a cause ay? :guitar

I sympathise with you mate,i've had a few terriers like that and they never seemed to learn.

 

I gave up chasing them though,unless i was going to give a good bollocking, as somebody once told me they think the chase is a game.

 

Maybe its just in the make up of the dog,some like to be up front and some like to stick to your heel,i dont know.What i do know is how frustrating it is waiting for it to come back.

 

Like Millet says, keep it on a lead,at least 'til it knows the score,
