Hi,

My lurcher has had an infected toe for about 3 weeks not, been on antibiotics for this time and it doesn't seem to be getting any better, spent around £150 on the pills so far and no real improvement.

They want to cut the nail under sedation and remove it for another £150.

It seems a bit extreme for a toe nail infection and think I am being taken for a ride.

I have tried to get in touch with a greyhound vet but the phone doesn't work anymore.

What do you guys think?

If the nail is still no better even after antibiotics then the infection is obviously deep seated: has your vet prescribed Antirobe( this is an antibiotic which treats anaerobic infections where the bacteria causing the infection don't need oxygen to survive, unlike most surface infections where the bacteria need oxygen).

If you have already been given Antirobe and ift hasn't worked, then I'd get the nail taken right off: some things just don't heal properly and it might always cause your dog lameness and pain.

Your choice: another £150 or more weeks and months of problems. Having the nail taken right out should not cause your dog any problems once healed.

i have had this problem twice befor with my terrier diggin hard ground and breakin the end of the nail of and an infection gettin deep inside the base of the nail causin it to swell.antibiotics have stopped the infection gettin anyworse but the only way ive sorted it is bathing the foot twice a day minimum in warm water with a few drops of tea tree oil and massaged the infected area at the dogs discomfort but no pain no gain. once dry ill put a drop of t t oil on and work it up into the base of the nail, both times cleared up totally within a week, hope it helps mate

This happened to me a few weeks ago. All around her nail bed was infected, swollen and looked like an abscess. had her on AB's and Anti-inflammatories.. had her up a Harewood where a few people looked at it for me and gave various bits of advice... :icon_eek:

So I bathed her foot for 5mins 2-3 times a day in salt water ( water as hot as she could stand) gently massaging it while bathing.. it started to improve after a couple of days and fine now.. although I do think that this will be a reoccurring as its happened before.

Hope it heals..
