steve0146 0
My deerhound cross lurcher just cut the inside of his front leg last week. About 10 cm long but really deep. Took him to vets to get it checked. They put a banadage on it and told me to clean it twice a day. He also got some antibiotics. Went back yesterday for check up. They changed the bandage and put one staple in it. So far so good. Then they gave me the bill. £ 110. For two bandages, antibiotics and a staple. I was fuming and refused to pay. After I calmed down I realised I probably had to pay as the work had already been done. Is it a complete rip off or worth it?

sean.t 0
Vets dont get so many working dogs in there clinics and most of there work with k9s is toy dogs with half whit owners who say "They want the best for their doggy, cause it means the world to them" and thats just a licesense to steal for a vet because those half whit owners who put hats and scarves on their yorkie terriers in the cold dont know a f**k about dogs, whereas when you've kept working dogs and seen the battlewounds they sustain and it doesn't bother them then you know you're dog doesn't need half the things its getting. I know this because I did a summers work expeirience with a vet incase your wondering. Get some surgical thread and do the stiches yourself from now on, there easy enough done, and get a bottle of alcohol to clean the wounds after. Avoid the vet at all costs(literally) Sean

Guest anonymous
Vet prices have trebled over the last 5 years. I reckon it's down to the rise in people insuring their pets. Unlike car garages that charge double if your getting your car sorted through the insurance, vets charge everyone the insurance rate. Most pet dogs are insured so they don't notice, it's us clowns that see the difference.

artic 595
Vets are there to make money, simple as. I had to attend a town vet due to the fact our village vet (who was spot on) had moved to new pastures. Well all i got was dirty looks, and loads of questions that i refused to answer about my dog, because i know that they are against working a hamster let alone a good working dog. Now we have a good australian vet moved back into the village and is as sound as a pound, down to earth, understandable, careing, fair and honest. Sorry to read that you got ripped chap. Its a disgrace. Edited June 2, 2009 by artic
sue 1
I find it hard to believe how some of you get ripped off by some vets its disgraceful ,I must be one of the lucky ones to have a great vet most it has ever cost me is just over £90 and that was for 3 x rays ,your best bet is ring around a few and ask prices i did and found a star vet
steve0146 0
They charged me loads for this 'magical' antiseptic liquid called hibiscrub that they use in hospitals to clean wounds and wash hands before operations. Doing some research, you can buy it from boots for about £4 a bottle. It really concentrated and you have to dilute it before using it. The bloody banadage had fallen down his leg before we even got home. I'm definately sorting the smaller wounds myself from now on.
