bassett hound

Recommended Posts

The Basset Hound is a short-legged breed of dog of the hound family. They are scent hounds, bred to hunt rabbits by scent. Their sense of smell for tracking is second only to that of the Bloodhound. The Basset Hound was bred to hunt. Its keen nose and short stature are suited to small-game hunting on foot. Training is a touchy topic when dealing with the Basset Hound breed. Trainers must be persistent with this breed in order to achieve a well mannered dog, as Bassets have a tendency to listen to their noses instead of verbal commands.

- those are snippets I copied from a site but from personal experience since hunting with them has declined there standard and working ability has too. They are used because they will not stop looking for their quarry till they find it, as long as there is a scent there is a way pretty much.

Any particular reason for a basset and not something with a bit more legs?

You should try getting out with a good English pack like the Westerby Bassets There not in decline.

Unfortunatley they are up here, the only ones you see are the ones whose owners dont excercise them enough and they dont have half as much muscle as the others pictured below are. :clapper: Now those are working dogs. Id love to see them in action, good to see them do what they are bred to. :D

do they try and get to ground mate.when they have run one to ground.they cracking little hounds mate.

Although my two are only half as big as the normal working Bassets they never offer to go to ground. Bud the Beagle X Tekle has never realy dug himself in too far but has to said that on the odd occassion when something is found not too far from ground level he get to be in on some action. His Daughter ' Lucy' is the same but she has been known to go and ten or more minutes getting aquanted with Charley, the good thing is she never stays long.
