foxfan 479
i can remember back inthe eighties, pelts being sent down to cobbledicks, £25 for wet pelt, the lads also used to sell them in hertford mkt and get between £12 and £17 each, old jim tookey would buy them and sell them on.i reckon it all went tits up, when the antis kicked up about fur farming. Yep all pelts sold wet, rolled onto brown paper, wrapped and sent by courrier. Dont know how they graded them but some you thought were ok, got less than a tenner for, only the tip top fetched £25. fish 148
I was mooching around a bit of new permission today and bumped into a nice old fella it turns out he used to do a fair bit of hunting and a little with the terriers.we must have stood there gassing for an hour he tells me he moved over here from donegal ireland back in the 50,s and them days there was a bounty on fox and would be paid for every fox killed. he said the police or official you took them to would nick the foxes tongue to stop you claiming for the same fox twice by taking it to another police station they must of been plague proportions back then to have a bounty on them any light on it?? its all history thinking back to our chat im unsure wether the bounty was in ireland or uk when he moved over.. we get 2 euro per tale for fox and the same for a coypu tale here in france. An oul boy near me used to collect the bounty on them years ago.At that time he said they cut the tongue off in the station and he had to get rid of the fox himself but what they used to do was buy a packet off back bacon and cut the slices into the shape off the foxes tongue and go into the station with the bacon hanging out to be cut off and theyd march round as many stations as they could that day getting the bounty on the same fox, feckin genius Quote Link to post

desertdog 149
i think the way they were graded was the conditon of the pelt, the better the pelt the better it was for you in your pocket, dont ever remember getting any less, than £18.00, these things will never come back, its a crying shame , all of it lost and allthe knowledge and history a way of life gone.,the lads would get out and be after old red as much as they could, and try and get him with out toomuch damage. westwicklow 4
We got IR£17/fox in the dim and distant past! Was great until the anti-fur doo-gooders took over.... even released the mink from local mink farms. That was a very practical move which was welcomed by the farmers and locals.... NOT!
