Hi all,

on my sons insisstance we have been saving our rabbit skins and curing them quite successfuly with salt. This has been working well but leaves the skin a bit stiff.

Does anyone out there have any tips on making them more supple?

Also have you got any suggestion of a good garment to make?

What has anybody made using rabbit skins?

I fancy some underpants for those chilly winter mornings ferreting

All the best George

Leather suppliers do a tanning solution. Curing with salt is not tanning and will always leave a skin stiff and liable to become a slimey mess if it gets wet. A tanning solution will change skins into leather. You have to make sure that the membranes are scraped off before you follow instructions on the bottle.

i used to do same with salt

left with a skin that wa slike bit o cardboard....

need a very sharp knife and carefully scrape the skin tissue off of the "hide"

once done this i used a cheap big bottle o moisturiser 99pence job

just cover and massage in well till skin back to soft flexible supple self

you must get all the skin tissue off or it will rot and stink

usually just hand sewed 2 or 3 together the bloody cat always use dto take a major shine and sleep 24 bloody 7 on the things couldnt get her backside of of em

Have read to use lard on animal skins after salt, but don't know what it is like. Never tried it. Used salt and then wrapped skin round dummy. Still using it now couple years on. As long as it doesn't get wet then it's no trouble.
