liongeorge 7
Hi all, on my sons insisstance we have been saving our rabbit skins and curing them quite successfuly with salt. This has been working well but leaves the skin a bit stiff. Does anyone out there have any tips on making them more supple? Also have you got any suggestion of a good garment to make? What has anybody made using rabbit skins? I fancy some underpants for those chilly winter mornings ferreting All the best George

wulf 32
My mate made a hat out of rabbit skins. Like a coonskin hat but without the tail or ear flaps. so basically the only similarity was that it was made out of fur and it went on his head?
steviesun 0
Leather suppliers do a tanning solution. Curing with salt is not tanning and will always leave a skin stiff and liable to become a slimey mess if it gets wet. A tanning solution will change skins into leather. You have to make sure that the membranes are scraped off before you follow instructions on the bottle.

ferreterni 29
Have read to use lard on animal skins after salt, but don't know what it is like. Never tried it. Used salt and then wrapped skin round dummy. Still using it now couple years on. As long as it doesn't get wet then it's no trouble.
