Bigshrimp 5
Sorry again for the newbie questions....but trying to figure my options for a future running dog. Could a sufficient rabbit hunter be made out of a whippet pup from lure coursing lines? Problem here is that lurchers aren't very common at all (people mostly hunt with hounds). But I am quite intrigued by this form of hunting. What we do have here are people who take part in competative lure coursing and breed lines to fulfill this task (all purebreds from my understanding). Do you think these lines would be good enough to create a sufficient rabbit hunter if I brought the pup up as such? My other option would be to import a lurcher from U.K. or Ireland....but I would be hesitant to do this without seeing the sire/dam in action. Any thoughts? Quote Link to post
Big bald beautiful 1,231
A lot do both over here so i cant see why not, as long as there not just bred for early pace and not tiny runnty looking things Quote Link to post
Paid 935
Do they race greyhounds over there ? As here most of the greys used in lurchers are just inanimate object chasers, much like purely lure coursing whippets would be. Have you tried contacting any of the lure coursers, and asked if any chase real stuff too ? Quote Link to post

Good suggestion to just ask the lure coursing clan. I definitely will when more serious about actually getting a running dog. Just really trying to understand the sport right now so that I can jump right in when ready. Assuming a whippet would be the best bet for rabbits? Quote Link to post
