Remington 700 LTR

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking of getting a Remington 700 LTR .223 and was wondering if anyone out there has one and how do they find it. I've read quite a few reviews which all rate it highly but it's always good to hear from people who have owned one themselves. If anyone has seen one for a good price or have one for sale please PM me with details.

All the best

Have an SPS tactical which is the same barreled action but in a cheapo (Hogue) stock. It's a good rifle, shoots straight. I wouldn't have another because the barrel is so short that it makes getting good velocities a pain. That only matters as I am shooting targets - it's killed its fair share of foxes and not one argued about the missing velocity.

What do you plan to do with it?

Are you walking around with the rifle or using from a vehicle?

The SPS Tactical is borderline for a walkabout rifle; the LTR is heavier still. I am of course including scope and bipod and moderator in this. On its own the SPS-T is a decent enough weight - I don't think it's heavy. But with the bits added, it takes its toll after a few hours, even with a decent sling.

I would have a look at CZ's Varmint Kevlar or Laminate. Similar cost to the LTR AFAIK, but the barrel profile is a bit less. So long as you're not trying to shoot longer ranges, the short barrel will be fine. The CZ has a much better trigger than a Remington too, though you may not think so when you try them - CZ's factory set up is awful, but a half-hour adjusting it (instructions in the manual) makes it absolutely awesome.

CZ comes with a 26 inch barrel from the factory, ideal for target but not for a fox gun with a moderator on it; worth getting the barrel chopped so I wouldn't get one that's already screwcut.

Failing that, Tikka T3 Varmint is worth a look as well, if you want the short barrel then that's how they come now anyway, so you're sorted. Balance is pretty good, weight relatively low. Accuracy likely to be excellent.

All that said, if you are walking about lots, then you're better off with a light barrel. Should you want to use match bullets for the targets, then you'll want a 1:9 twist (all the Varmint ones I mention have 1:9 or faster barrels). That leaves you a choice of Savage or Tikka (check the Tikka though as they are coming in 12 and 8 twist now - says which one on the barrel) IIRC. Either would work well.
