What type of dog would you recommend...

Guest MickyB

Ive seen some very impressive guard dogs about, guarding yards and sheds, comercial property etc.,.. But, these are on comercial grounds, and the boundry fences/gateways are very well marked/signposted.

In my opinion, it isnt worth getting a dog for the sole purpose of guarding a domestic property, good security will not set you back much more than a good dog, and is the way to go in a domestic situation. And also, like has been stated, if you do go ahead and get a dog for a home guard, dont get something that will do any damage, as you WILL be in the shit, and the dog may get PTS if it attacks a burglar. Better off with a yapper/growler not biter!

too many seem to have answered without reading teh question.

He doesn't need a guard dog its his neighbour who is acting on advice of a crime prevention officer as the lad who posted this is the neighbour and the only difference between the houses is the lad who posted this has dogs

too many are mentioning guard dogs, i believe what was suggested was a "watch" dog, a completely different prospect, she (and anyone really) doesn't need a dog to take on a burglar, what a dog should do is let you know there is someone about, not detain them or eat them, and i refer to my previous post, tell her to get a terrier, any terrier even a bloody westie, or a small spaniel....as long as it has a voice and is allowed to use it, burglars will be put off by noise, they dont want disturbing/catching in the act/the neighbour ringing the police etc....

and SS going on about alarms etc.....she has been seen by the CPO, they are the experts on alarms/locks/signs/cctv and the law around protecting a property, i am sure they have advised on all the relevant legal things she could use....further it seems she wants company when her husband is away, as the original post mentioned her husband working away........so a small brave and noisy terrier type dog is what i would tell her to get...

In my experience ............ CPO's are generally the fattest most stupid and useless of all the available Constables, hence why they get sent to drive around drinking tea frightening old ladies.

You make the above statement seemingly assuming I have no experience of the Security Industry, are you suggesting that any of the involved parties would have received the best, most practical advice from the CPO?

Let's be fair here, consistency isn't one of the Polices strong points.

So "get a dog" is the advice given, dog is obtained and duly bites someone, reckon the CPO will take the blame?

You're wrong about who are the experts "on alarms/locks/signs/cctv and the law around protecting a property"

The "experts" are the ones who sneak around in the dark meaning that any of the above is necessary!

Police, experts in Law? Am not picking here, but do they receive specific training regarding law? I thought the Lawyers who the Police collect evidence for were the experts in law.

Not trying to pick a fight, too many on here do that and take things personally, speaking from my own experiences of life, the CPO's i have met have been at the end of 30 years service, and have taken the role to gain qualifications in crime prevention that will stand them in stead to get a job when they retire(usually for a large corporation or design company), the two CPO's i have met are both extremely knowledgeable on locks etc...all the pyshical security measures you mention, obviously you have had different experiences of life and see things differently, but i would state that all the CPO's i have met have been experts on securing a house/building/garage having seen all the ways a property can be breached and having spent many years thinking like a burglar (most burglars just kick in the front door anyway-very few are stealthy, but its keeping them out of the garden and making entry as difficult as possible thats the way forward) and regarding the law, yes police have training in law, to identify offences to make arrests lawful, yes lawyers are employed to analyis the evidence etc.....but what we are on about here is the legality on house security (i.e. telling the home owner what they can do and what they can't when constructing pyshical security on a house- this will fall within a CPO's training)

And everyone (you included SS) keep going on about dogs biting people.............the CPO has looked at the ladies house which keeps getting screwed and the immediate neighbour and the only actual difference is one has dogs!

i think perhaps if we had been there we may all have understand what the suggestion was better than third guessing it on here! but the way i read it, its just a dog, both for her company when her husband is away and one that will bark if someone is in the back garden......most family pets will do that, both of my dogs will bark if someone strange either deviates from the garden path or comes on to the drive, or looks over the back fence......there is an insurance company that gives a small discount to dog owners (regardless of it being a shitzu or rottweiller) as any dog is a deterent to burglars statistically........purely from the dog barking perspective..........

Happy hunting

Agree with SS the alarm system wont need food walking etc etc was something on tv other night and his cctv and alarm system saved his house from major damage, he was in spain and his alarm system sent a text message to his phone to say he had intruders, so he logged on to his cctv on line and seen the b*****ds so rang the police who where there in minutes. Cant remember the name but its only £500-1000 and well worth its weight in gold in my opinion.

No and it wont keep her company when her husband is away either.......the original post does say the couple are well off....so i shouldn't imagine the cost of this would be prohibitive either.......but do they already have something like this? CCTV is all well and good but the suspects have got to be know to the police viewing it and the CCTV has to be really good quality to recognise them, unless they are caught in teh act and the description again in the original post indicates that access is gained by teh suspects by a footpath near the house that leads to teh town and the house in question is at the end of a road (last house on it) so police drive down the road and the suspects run off down the path.........then teh CCTV is viewed and has to really good quality with known suspects or it is pointless

I am really sat here laughing everyone on this forum has a dog or two and here they are telling this chap to tell his neighbour not to get a dog to keep her company and bark if someone is in teh garden :clapper:

this is all about deterent and company............not something to eat an intruder or a hi-tech system that can fail

someone else mentioned geese, that would be a good idea too..........they used them on parts of the berlin wall instead of GSD's to warn the guards that people were trying to sneak through

For once I'm not picking a fight either.

I'm surprised you are questioning the reliability of a decent alarm system and suggesting an easily bribed/killed/poisoned dog instead.

Does the fact the couple are well off give any clues as to why they keep getting burgled?

Your point about CPO's undertaking training to give them better chances of re employment after 30 years of service, are you saying that after 30 long years service they are still motivated towards helping the public? Or do they just give the basic advice they are required to and go?

The point about CCTV only being useful if good quality etc, well obviously I wasn't suggesting they waste money on a crap one.

As for identification ......... how likely is it that it would be someone unknown that was breaking into houses? Wouldn't they be likely to climbed the career ladder to the status of burglar? I'd say it was extremely likely they'd be already known.

If the couple had ever wanted a dog, wouldn't they have had one already by now? Perhaps putting a dog into their home might be a wrong move, maybe they will resent "having to have one", maybe they are not responsible/sane/sober enough to look after a dog.

Alarms don't need feeding!

Many, many thanks for all your input everyone, I really do appreciate it. ;)

I have no doubts about my neighbors caring for a dog, have known them for a long time - lady in particular is lovely and seen me through a hard time a bit ago, in those times I would rather have been left alone, but she would always be over with some excuse - 'Ooh I cooked too much chicken could the dogs or ferrets eat it',...'I seem to have ended up with 'free' tickets to the cinema, do you think the children could use them?' etc., etc. I'm not that daft! Pay back time for me to help her out methinks!

Called her in earlier, when she was passing (she has a flash car the husband got her, but she walks everywhere if she is left her own - think it is about not wanting to be in the house herself, she would rather be out. if you get my drift). She is quite sold on the idea of a yappy dog now, although insurance is also given them a megga hard time, they did install CCTV with signs and what have you, the 3rd time they got done over (FAIL, this time), please remember she is of an age, was scared of an alarm system which was urged last time, for the record their property is set up differently from mine - they have front/back/kitchen/wall of patio/garage leading to inside kitchen door...the latter being the point of entry this time. They are getting an alarm now as they have no choice - no insurance if they don't!

Now a belt and braces job as far as she is concerned, she would love the company of a dog (honestly. if he is not away working - he's bigging up his profile and company) she is quite excited as I did a few calls when she was here, two local rescues I help when I can, we will look tomorrow. Both rescues are sound, work in progress with all your help. For the record she doesn't care about laptops, cash, jewelery etc...she is more a pictures of her grandkids and cheap tat given over the years type of gal)... feeling safe in her own home is all she wants, she terrified of confronting someone her home, anyone being in her room while she sleeps, she just wants a warning, and would call the police while keeping the dog by her.

As for the CPO, couldn't fault him, he was trying to help. Had him in to the house for a chat with them - did point out to him, we have no trappings of wealth, my house is not extended as theirs is, he pointed out to me the kids have the usual consoles + games, phones, banks of DVD's, etc., and all the other gubbings which are easily disposed of for the next fix...Touche to him!

In his favour/disclaimer at NO point did he recommend my neighbors got a dog...he pointed out in a humorous way, that the terrier gave him and the neighbour bloke a hard time and was still giving 'voice' (locked out in the garden - giving it what for, she had not approved them! Course the auld hounds had all but put the kettle on for them :icon_redface: ).

Again, cant thank all of you enough, very much appreciate all of your posts.

Glad she has a neighbour like you!

and i did read it right she wanted a dog for company as well as an early warning, and if she walks rather than drives the dog will have a happy life, good luck in getting her a mutt!
