il go out on a limb here and presume you are meaning 17hmr. ammo choices is all down to what the gun likes generally 17 grainers do group tighter than the 20grain ammo. all the ammo is made in the same factory then given a different lablel and price tag to show the different manufacturers such as hornady. remington, winchester, federal and so on . just go out and buy a few boxes and see the difference then you will clearly see what your gun likes, no point basing your gun performance to a friend with the same gun chances are they will group differently.

I've only had the 17hmr for 6 months or so. Was so impressed with the accuracy at 100mtrs that I didn't consider trying any alternative to the ammo I was recommended, I had already reached my limit.

Hornady 17g varmint express for me :clapper:

PS I do value ammo choice with the other rimmy, my .22 shoots distinctly better with Eley subs than winnies or other stuff

By which I mean the gun/ammo combination shoots exactly where I point it. It's up/down to me to point better ;);)

I recently bought some 17 Gr Hornady and Winchester, previously having only using Remington (about 2,000), no difference as far as I can tell, also got a box of Win 20 Gr 'Gamepoint' just to check them out, in my rifle the 20 Gr shoot about 1/2" low at 100 yards (no suprise there then).

My only comment would be that the 17 Gr 'normal' rounds rip up the bunnies big time, bits of copper under the pelt 6" away from the entry wound, but the 'Gamepoint' don't do that, maybe if you shoot fox with yours the 20 Gr might be the best option, (personally I don't I use a centrefire), but if you don't have that choice then the 20 Gr would seem a good alternative.

For some strange reason the Remington 17g were not good in my CZ HMR either, although the groups were better than above.

Winchesters are good but the best in mine are Federal 17g V Shok and Hornady 17g V-Max, on the right day I can virtually put them in the same hole at 100 yards...this was Hornady on a good day a few weeks back, 4 shots....
