Breeding is everything, but you get the odd "one off" thats bred from shite.

Well it's not a one of then is it? :whistling:

Eh ?

Perhaps i should explain better, sorry.

What i mean is, you will get a higher percentage of top class dogs from well bred lines,

but you will occasionaly get a good dog, even from street bred curs.

you will only ever get a GREAT dog from well bred lines, imho.

well as a great man once said "mibees aye...mibees naw"

The only time I would consider a dog from unproven stock is if it was a 1st cross, lines have to start somewhere but its a risk IMO

What would the risks be?

i se no risk but there may be a chance it goes on to be a goodun

I'm sure I saw one with a blackboard out once drawing diagrams of where to grab quarry.....my point was about hunting not table manners....what does a pup of 6 - 8 weeks know about hunting?.....or do you enter them early in Larkhall????

Theres no need for sarcasm, and I dont come from Larkhall  I enter my pups around 8 months to an odd rabbit here and there trying to make it as easy as possible for them, around 10-12 months I will start lamping them a night or two a week or giving them a few runs during the day, but if they havent got what it takes all the conditioning/feeding/working alongside other dogs etc in the world wont change that fact. JMHO

I thought you shot :gunsmilie: your pups at 8 months old? :censored::nono:

Can you explain the reason behind this? :nono:

Why bring 2 pups up to 8 months of age and shoot them?

You cant know either way if they were going to be any good or no good at this age :hmm:

Its you that should be shot :headshot::

At least she never punted them on and knows where they are.. More people should be resposible pts or pet home.

She bred them it was her choice they where bred from workers and where not going to make the grade why keep shit or sell it so some ned can come back and slate her for breding sub standard muts.

If more folk where honest there would not be so much shit in the free adds or on here and pounds would not be bursting at the seems with ex workers.

Why you so intrested in her bussiness??

Back to the origional point:

In my opinion a good dog has to have the breeding so that it can inheret the following qualities and more:

Nose, prey drive, speed, brains, conformation etc

But that is only part of the story as it will be the owner who has to help bring the best out of the dog so that it can fulfill its potential. (guidance and training)

So a great dog can be born, but it will also need a good owner to make it.

I believe the truly great dogs are born. There is a small percentage of dogs that will make outstanding workers in spite of a hunters mistakes and shortcomings (the great ones). I would much rather start with well bred pups out of outstanding parentage ( better odds of getting an outstanding worker ).

My first Lurcher, was a first x collie greyhound, greyhound dog ( Cotton King he won the waterloo cup, x a proper working hill collie bitch, the bitch was bang in season, she was tied up in the small byre, and Cotton king, had got loose from his small exercise yard, the mating took place and I picked this big black pup just like his father, I schooled the pup on Mixie Rabbits, this was the making of this pup and at 16months I introduced him to hares, the dog stood just over 26" and a nice length about him, that dog could change gears, up to the hare steady himself, and then Bang, he ran most of his life single handed, (( and I found if you run your dog single handed they work much better and use all there craft and skill, ((( I had his blood in my lurchers up to the early seventies, there is nothing wrong with a first x providing the parents are first class workers and of course there is a lot of wastage in a first x litter, you may only get 2 or 3 good pups out of the litter, ((( at this moment I have a 3/4 greyhound x 1/4 beardie collie, he is only coming up for 6months, but I see lot there that I like about him, in my eyes he is a very nice pup, ((( the sappling has to have the right ingredients, in him. speed and brains, and only by working and schooling you can bring that out of him, and then of course you can get the super pup, everything just comes natural to them (( but they are few
