shottyscotty 3
22lr is the most traditional and proberbly the best for price and ammo but 17 hmr is pretty good but ammo is expensive. Quote Link to post
mattydski 560
Yep, .22lr is the best way to serve an apprentiship. Make sure to practise on paper at varying ranges first! It dont cost alot to run either..so get shooting!! Quote Link to post

sako243 0
Hi Depends on how much you are going to use it and how many rounds you are going to fire on any one night. If you can afford the .17hmr and ammo, go for it. I personally found the 22lr a bit dangerous if firing on a flat trajectory as the bullets would bounce of the ground and go stotting off in all directions, hitting the sides of farm buildings etc. AND you can still do a charlie out to 150yrds no problem if you get the chance! Just my opinion though. Cheers Happy hunting!!!!!!!!!!!!! Quote Link to post
DoaS 0
brno or cz 22lr - or consider a ruger 10/22 (that was my first rifle) - get permission on your license to get hollowpoint ammo - much safer as ricochet speed is vastly reduced, and killing power is massively increased. Quote Link to post
Mr_Logic 5
AND you can still do a charlie out to 150yrds no problem if you get the chance! That's plain wrong I'm afraid, and very inhumane. To do that shot, you need to place a tiny bullet into the brain. Not just the head, but the brain. Now, this is possible, no question. But, on the lamp and potentially with wind as well, you should not be taking this shot. It is a shot for exceptional circumstances only. 100 yards is perfectly OK, but again, you have to have a clean head shot really. HMR does not have penetration or stopping power once it gets a little way out. It's fine on a bunny, but not a fox. I've learned the hard way, and will not take such a shot again. Basic rule - HMR on fox = headshot unless it's close. Sorry to preach, but your post implied that HMR is a perfectly adequate fox calibre, and it's not - I don't want someone inexperienced repeating my mistake. Quote Link to post

There was no implication intended. Sorry if it was mis-leading. As i said-(if you get the chance). If i.m lamping or lying out for fox, it's the good old 243. Absolutely every time.!! But if i'm bunny bopping with the 17hmr and get a decent chance at charlie, i take it. My reply was meant to concentrate more on the safety aspect of 22lr at flat trajectory. Can't have all those walking brigade out there on public paths etc with bullets pinging all round their earholes. Cheers Quote Link to post

mjr88 50
any tips on buying my first rimfire what calibre, make any tips would be great cheers In my opinion you will not go wrong with a CZ .22lr. All CZ's have a large following here in the uk , and abroad , due to their overall value for money. Combine that and the low price of the 22lr bullet , enough said , John Quote Link to post
ezzy6.5 0
Don't be tempted by a Semi auto, i've tried them all but i've allways ended up with a CZ bolt action. At the moment i have a left hand CZ 22 american and a CZ 17HMR varmint, both bloody brilliant rifles both have Erik brooks triggers and are really accurate but to be hohnest i use the 22 most of all it's virtually silent, cheap Ammo, accurate and is a joy to carry (it's got a Leopold Centenary 3x9x40 in low mounts and a SAK mod) If i havent shot for a few days i can just go for a walk and have a few practice shots at sticks or mole hills without disturbing anyone. I know the 22 has a reputation for being dangerous but a safe backstop is a safe backstop, how many people are injured each year as a result of 22 rimmy ricochets? ATB Ezzy Quote Link to post
