This fella was swimming about and he was the size of a door already! Hi stormrider, Where about in devon you been fishing? I live Exmouth/Dawlish (me and the Mrs have just split so was Exmouth now will be Dawlish for a bit). I used to do a bit of fishing, used to enjoy mackeral when they were about, lots of fun and you only need basic kit and dont need to be an expert. Are they about at the moment then? Seems like a good time to get out there and enjoy the things that have been a bit difficult for the last 5yrs. Any tip of any good places down my neck of the wood? Have to dig the old rod out. Some new line and a few feathers and lures, sounds a great idea!! Cheers! Neil Quote Link to post
stormrider8 59
Theres hundreds around at the minute mate. I caught these at hopes nose, i was hitting 3 or 4 fish every cast. It can get very busy there especialy on weekends. You could try long quarry in babbacome or even the breakwater at Dawlish you will even catch of the beach in Exmouth. But i would go to Hopes or Babacome. The shiny tinsel or white feathers work best, all the best mate. Quote Link to post

Cheers Mate, Think i will give it a go this week, My MOT has run out on the car and going to be getting a new car once i find one so Dawlish is the nearest place to me at the moment so will try there then, theres the big break water by boat cove or the little one by the main beach by the viaduct, will give them both a go but any view as to wich is the best? suppose it just depends where the shoals turn up. used to go there as a kid also. White feathers and tinsel it is then. Cheers mate. Neil Quote Link to post
driller killer 33
Hi mate, Sorry got a couple more questions if thats ok, sorry only done fishing with feathers a few times and by far not an expert. With the feathers what weight weight do you put on the end of them? So your able to get the feathers out there. Im using a 12/13ft carp rod, so resonable at casting. Also with the feathers, the way there tied to the main line they all naturaly hang in one direction, do you tie them to your main line so there going against when you reel in or with it? Not sure if that makes sense, the way they fall towards does it point towards your rod or the end weight? Hope that makes some more sense. What weight line do you use also? Sorry one last thing, when you are reeling in do you find it best with a slowish constant reel or reel for a little as you draw the rod tip down and when you reach the bottom stop reeling and slowly draw back on the rod? Hope that makes sense also? Sorry to ask for the idiot lessons, ferrets is my usual thing but i do enjoy a spot of fishing on occasion. Thank you for all your help. When the winter comes round next your welcome to come out with us for a day out with the ferrets if you never tried it and would like to give it a go? Cheers again Neil Edited May 30, 2009 by driller killer Quote Link to post
stormrider8 59
When i was at school down there they used to fish the breakwater to the right on the main beach at Dawlish, used to catch loads!! I would use a 3 0r 4 ounce weight with a carp rod mate but more a trail and error thing. Dont really think it matters about the feathers direction, iv always wondered that myself.. they work both ways! Id be right up for a bit of ferreting.. Quote Link to post
driller killer 33
I went to school in Dawlish, how old are you? Im 32, had Mr Bird as my tutor. When the winter comes round again i will give you a shout about the ferreting, cant do it this time of year as the ferrets will have a feast on the baby rabbits and then a snooze and can be a pain to get them out. Got a really good permission that is completely crawling with them, every hedge is riddled with them, my mate does a bit of shooting there but i dont have a gun, something for the future. and a lurcher at some point. I got some kits (baby ferrets) at the mo if your interested, wont be ready to go for about a month but if your interested let us know. Picking up new car mon so can get all my fishing kit sorted then and give it a go. Thanks for the advice. Take care Neil Quote Link to post
