Asking because if you have a slow rate such as 1:12 you may find it hard to stabilize 85 gr heads What pupose will the 85gr be for - deer? If your purpose is for fox then perhaps a lighter bullet head would be the answer What made you decide on N150? I assume you were recommended to this powder - nothing wrong with N150 - I use it in both my 22.250 s Not suggesting for one moment you sound like a beginner, but your best bet is to read up as much as possible about this calibre. If you are just starting out, your best bet is to team up with an experienced reloader, that is the best way to learn. Dont be fooled into thinking that your bullet should sit just off the lands - there is quite a lot of people that will tell you this. Bear this in mind that the 'just on/off the lands' is really only suited for custom barrels and AI barrels. My 22.250 s both shoot at their best more than 130 thou off the lands - both will group > 1" at 300 yds and my 6.5 is seated back 222 thou and groups >1/2" at its zero of 120 yds. Peter PS Start your COL at 2.700" on the 243 Quote Link to post
arveyboy 0
only just started mate. yes the n150 was recommended by my dealer who uses it for his .243. its for fox and muntjac so a mix for the two is preferred. at the moment i'm just playing around to see what my rifle likes so any different loads will be welcome to be tried. i forgot to ask the twist rate in the shop woooops. its a remington 700 sps dm if that helps. also i cant find my camera anywhere which is annoying me because i wanted to post a pic of my rifle, reloading set-up and first loads. it will have to wait until the morning. i have to say this reloading jobby is fun and i havnt even fired a shot yet. what colour anorak do i need? At a guess I would say your rifle is a 1:10 and if so would be fine for the heavier bullets. Hm....the dealer uses it in his 243 - ask him what weight head he uses, the N150 is OK mainly for the lighter bullet weights - you would have probably been better off with N160 which is a slower burning powder for the heavier bullet heads This reloading business ain't fun it becomes an obsession and a way of life - just wait till you get into the wonderful world of neck turning and annealing You only start putting the anorak on when you weigh and segregate your new brass and bullet heads and start worrying about case concentricity Quote Link to post
arveyboy 0
ive just found out. its a 1:9 1/8 twist rate which should be good to stabilize up to 100g ammo am i right? sorry, typo, my dealer uses n150 in his .223 and swears by it. the thing is now, ive just spent 60 quid on a tub of the stuff so i think i'll stick with it for now and see what i can do with it. i might try and get hold of some hornady 87g v-max as well as that is supposed to be a good mix for foxy and deer. am i right? i've just spent the best part of half an hour trying to figure out what off the lands means. i dont know which way round it is. if a bullet is further off the lands does that mean it is seated less deeply? the reloads ive done are at 2.6inches c.o.l so are you saying to seat them shallower? sorry for all the questions Quote Link to post
SNAP SHOT 194
vit N150 to loads between 33.7 and 37.9g of powder, caution 37.9 is max load. COL. 2.640" Do not worry about distance from the lands when your only learning to reload, get the basics sorted first...... snap. Quote Link to post
arveyboy 0
cheers snap, what does it mean for future reference? Quote Link to post
SNAP SHOT 194
lands is a term used for the start of rifling at the chamber end of your gun... some bullets like a jump a couple of thou, off the lands and some bullets like to be touching the lands, finding the sweet spot for a particular bullet is the key to making a good shooting round into a great one.... And as for your question about differing loads for different powders within one maker, it's down to density of the powder, burn rate, etc that determines the weight used... Quote Link to post
