Thanks Flytie,

I served in Afghan, 2001 afetr 9 11, 2005-06, again in 2006, & 2008,

As a sniper 06 & 08. i,ve not seen that before but i thought .50 and not of the one shot one kill ethos. 3rd time lucky by the sounds of it.

pretty impressive tho all the same....................

Bit of a trauma tho patrolling for days with a .50 Cal and Chubb !

sorry to be a bit slow with this . . .Robert Furlong took out a Taliban RFK gunner at 2657 yards with his 3rd shot. Mac.Millan TAC 50, Leupold 16x Tactical scope. 9000ft altitude tho so the air resistance was a lot less.

Zooms are good BUT most are set to max and never moved again .

Fixed is my preference for a hunting rifle , i have a zoom on the .22rf but its at max zoom and has been for 20 years.

I have a zoom on my range rifle though and it sometimes gets moved but not often.

I voted fixed...Although I have zoom on my .22 CZ 452 it has been on X6 since they day I got it. Having said that I have tried the zoom only to find out that zero has moved, maybee I dont spend enough on glass.

Thats what i find myself doing, leaving it on x6, and it seems bit pointless when i could use a fixed, also with a mil dot as you zoom in and out the mil dots change so i'd rather get used just one mag level

This is news to me and a lot of other people I'm sure, would you be kind enough to advise the source of this information!

Thank you!

Out of your book :icon_redface:

You amaze me, first off you do not know who I am, and second, enlighten us all, which of my books do you allege I wrote that gem in??

hmmm fixed or variable, -fixed, really simple, nothing to really break, no fiddling with magnification etc PLUS you can buy really good fixed mag glass for the same price as some not so good variable glass, I have a 6x42 S&B on my Rimfire and it is SUPERB! but If you could really justify it, or lead yourself into an impulse buy of a top quality european variable scope ;) then I'd definitely go variable, as you can carry it on say 3x and then if you see anything close you're ready to go and if there's something further away, you can just crank up the power, but i did hear that with the variable scopes, that esp. with the cheaper ones. as you change the magnification, the POI can change esp. at longer ranges, so I'l defeinitely spend that (a lot) more to get he peace of mind that your POI won't change with a more expensive scope... just my 2p worth

I suppose with a fixed power scope, you will learn easier how much to hold over/under as you can (in your mind) divide up the reticle into 1/4s that is what I do with My air gun scope, it's set at 6x almost permanently and never goes above 6x for shooting!

aah good to see that coldweld is shit-stiring again

It all depends on the job the scope is going to do. For example, if I'm deer stalking then I want the best glass for low light conditions, and the best contrast to see clearly to take a shot. If I have the money for a variable then I will get that, but the cost is a lot more than a lower power fixed mag. If the glass is good (mainly thinking Hungarian Schmidt) then it can be used for other things, e.g. my 8x56 is on my Hornet at the moment and doing a cracking job.

If I am shooting rabbits at long range, then I want a high power scope, so the top end of 16-25 is generally on a variable mag scope. During the daytime, it will spend a lot of time on full mag, but at night it will get turned down so I get more light through it.

For target work, I am undecided! I've had scopes I use on 10x and forget about it, but the Nightforce is generally on 22x (although not when it's warm - heat haze = can't see a thing!).

If I had to pick, then I guess it's variable mag for me. Not met anyone who just leaves it on full though, most have it set somewhere mid-range...
