Hunter4ever 0
I have attempted to catch some rats spotted by my chook pen for the past week, no avail. I use apple, corn and some seeds, although I'll put peanut butte down soon. Earlier today after I came home from school my mother said to me "Keep calm, and go down to your Rat trap." Naturally I was exited, hopefully I had caught the evasive bugger, yet when I got there I found a sparrow. I put peanut butter in there. no rat. Dunno wnhat to do. aaronpigeonplucker 32
the reason you caught a sparrow whas that you did not put a cover over your trap. you will catch birds in your trap if you do not cover it up. a large pipe cut in half will do the trick, or simply a large sheat of coratgated iron put over your trap like an upside down 'V'. however you do it it's important that the rat can get in and the trap can go off. here this will give you some ideas: http://www.thehuntinglife.com/html/section...r-rat-trap.html Edited May 19, 2009 by aaronpigeonplucker Quote Link to post
Hunter4ever 0
Tht's not the same trap. I have a large steel live trap, which the sparrow only got in because it's small. Any advice on bait? I've heard about: Burnt toast cheese chocolate goldeballs cereal apple marshmellow corn peanut butter dead mice & rats and have tried apple and corn. Will do peanut butter, but has anyone got other suggestions, or if some of these suggestions wrong? Quote Link to post
Foxy09 3
the reason you caught a bird is because your baiting it with bird food... ie seeds, use something smelly like sardines in sunflower oil, bet you catch him in a couple of days. Foxy Quote Link to post

Hunter4ever 0
I have put egg in it 3 hours ago actually, and I'll put some sardine in there. Quote Link to post
georgegml 0
better to try a fenn trap in a tunnell where you,ve seen it as they dont like to break cover i never bother to bait rat traps Quote Link to post

Hunter4ever 0
I haven't seen it in a tunnel, and baiting trap increases chance of capture. I've put some more egg in, and a bit of sardine, as well as drizzling juice all over it. Hopefully gettim Post results tommorow. Quote Link to post

Also, any ideas on catching this rat? What bait, where to place ect? It's currently in the chook pen. Caught a GREY SQUIRREL once in a rat trap on a chocolate flake. Quote Link to post

stubby 175
if its in the chicken coop, Its already feeding on chicken mash/pellets, why not bait it with what its used to eating, making sure theres no loose stuff elsewhere Quote Link to post
Hunter4ever 0
No idea why it's not taking the peanut butter. We spotted 'em months ago, so maybe their dead or gone. Quote Link to post
