Richie10 345
Hi, Building a kennel with run, going to lay a concrete floor, what have people used to seal it from the rain/urine etc? I don't like the ideal of using bitumen based ones. Thanks Rich

The amonia in the urine will eventually eat through most things. Concrete is waterproof so no real need to seal it. If your looking for something just to enhance the appearance then i'd consider quarry tiles. Look attractive and can be kept hygenic.......not really expensive either. Malt 379
Another alternative might be those rubber mats you can get from horsey places.
Richie10 345
Thanks, I heard that concrete can play havoc with their feet aswell. So doing it for the welfare of the dogs really.
Tuzo 251
Never heard of concrete affecting dogs feet, well not if its laid properly. Dogs have been on concrete since time began......most workers live in run of some description and its usually finished with a concrete floor. What probs have you heard about Richie mate ? GSPDave 0
My lot are on concrete floor and their feet are fine, it has not been sealed with anything just std floor paint (the non slip type) but they tend not to pee in the run they wait till they go out.
Cotswold 0
I used heavy-duty garage floor paint from Screwfix for the floor and carried in on about a third of the way up the walls in case one of the dogs has a swamp in the kennel. This has lasted for 2 years and is still sealed although I will probably refresh it all this summer. Incidentally, I made the floor out of sections of an old coal bunker which is really hard concrete and probably could have gone without sealing.

Fair enough, I was reading on the net that the dust and chemicals can affect the pad of the dogs. If that is not the case then that's great. Also being that it is concrete there is a chance it will soak up the wee and rain. Thanks for all the replys so far.

I see what your saying mate, to be honest when concrete is first laid it does give a fair bit of dust off.....there is a dusty residue usually on the top, just swill it over and give it a good brushing a few times. I'm sure all will be well mate if you swill and brush it before putting your juks on it..
mad al 146
Ritchie, once the concrete has "cured", brush off any surface dust/debris and give it a couple of coats of PVA or Unibond. This is a water based adhesive for the job. Dilute it in a bucket and slap it on with a wall brush. This is the stuff, PVA Bonding Agent http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Adhesives+...PVA/d180/sd3198 Al Edited May 19, 2009 by mad al

matt241075 12
hi ritchie if you want to seal your concrete go to a builders merchant and ask for sealocrete or an equivalant. its used to seal block paving etc and lasts for years and years. concrete is waterproof but pouris this will help stop things soaking right in. matt
