i used to work an earth that had a second level wich always held foxes yet there was only 1 dog out of say 20 we worked that earth with could actually find that level! why? f**k knows

all im saying is ive had shit and lots of it but that is only found out by constant work, honest views and hard faced actions.

anyone can say there dog is this and that but the lads out there with proper dogs are the first to admit that they have had more shit than gold.

start a season with ten finish it with 3 and thats about the truth of it lads well in my opinion it is.

same as running dogs

take 10 dogs at 18 mnth old give them a hard first season,be honest be truthfull to yourself and by the end of that first season you will have maybe 4 dogs left 3 ok and one outstanding,

if you think im talking shit then either you havent done enough or your standards are lower than myn and before anyone says ah you havent had the right breeding ect ect thats bollox the best bred dogs only throw a cpl of good ones per litter.

the end

All valid points in my eyes DG

And Blackpack I have had similar problems with bad spots/un-diggable places, i have a few places I wont put a terrier into no more! And one or two that I might let a wee bayer that wont stay have a look into... if I had one :(

micky b i always had black terriers and wouldnt have any others but due to very bad luck and only 1 terrier left who i can honestly say is a worker i was given a small jr off our local registered pack terrierman and i can honestly say he is small for my liking but i have bolted more foxes with him in such a short space than anything. Its opened my eyes to the other terriers around.

winnie spot on mate. I really cant believe some of the posts. A terrier should stay until dug to end of and if some of you think not then as i have always said the terrier is fxxxed. Very low standards i think im just glad some of the local lads only breed true working dogs and give them to local lads and not in it for the cash

when a fox goes to ground in a crag or quarry or under boulders on fells you just cant dig these places,so your dog needs to kill the fox and come out, i wouldentsay because it didnt stay it jacked, id say it done a good job.

Never presume the fox is dead untill you actually see it there infront of you. And a good working terrier is worth a hell of a lot more then a dead fox so i'd be carefull entering a dog in quarrys and levels. I work big rock piles and dont really like entering the dog in them but beggers cant be choosers.

well iagree with what your saying, but these crags rock piles and quarrys have been worked for hundreds of years so its kind of local information as to whats safe and whats not,but things can still go wrong,or if you dont know the area dont try if you cant dig it.

problems with terriers can only be two things, the breeding or the owner, there is no excuses,

i see what your saying, but where i live alot of the places where foxs get in are crags that you just cant dig so a terrier that stays would have a long stay as digging is impossible, diferent dogs for diferent jobs.

thats why you use a hard terrier then is it??

this is where a bolter comes into play!!

yes.as said earlier, different dogs for different jobs.both the bolter and the hard dog have their uses.i like both, and have worked both.the bitch i have is 4 year old so doubtfull she will turn hard now DG and its not as though shes only had a handfull of foxes, infact we are out upto 3-4 days a week in winter and 1-2 days in the summer, weather permiting(if its not too hot etc).

however, give it 18mth and im using a black terrier dog to line her.a VERY hard dog,5 year old, seen alot of work, been tested to the full(if you no what i mean).. the offspring i will be keeping either all the bitches or all the dogs.
