Guest rodsmith
IMO you need a mix of both a dog that is too hard isnt right as you can only dig here and there with him but a dog that doesnt mix isnt worth havin either cause if a fox wants too move a dog will have to hold him no matter what. I like a dog that sitts of yapping and when it calls for it he has no problem mixing. I have seen dogs that have plenty of scares but when your digging them they have to be dug out quick and thats not my kind of dog your right,my bitch has yet to struggle bolting a fox from even the biggest of places.theres a few boys on here that will vouch for her and she will get stuck in if need be,hence shes lost 9 teeth in the last 2 yrs.i dont mind a hard dog atall, ive had them,no doubt get another but i can cover alot of ground with my bitch, not uncommon to do the 3 neighbouring estates in 1 day, roughly 15000 acres.she will ONLY enter a place holding fox and will ONLY go to/work fox!! I've been out with Rod and his black bitch and everything he's saying i can back up,she works the earth really well and bolts her foxes really quickly getting up close and personal without getting too much damage. The ground he works is VERY hard digging thus needing a good bolting dog that don't work the other fella's,we have'nt blanked with this bitch.yet! However there are diferent dogs for different jobs,so long as we all stick togeather to keep our sport going what does it matter.HAPPY HUNTING!!! winnie 1
Bolting dogs are a real asset to some lads, no doubt about it. But would you consider a bolting only dog who is most likely 4 foot off his game all the time as a true working terrier? I would not. Dogs like this are a real gem for Hunt Terriermen, it is thier bread and butter but most lads who only keep one or two would not give them kennel space. Quote Link to post
night moocher 41
This bull/russell grafted for over nine years with me ,and having a glass coat [short] you would think the scars would shine out on him, very rarely did this dog get tagged to ground on fox or the newcastle fans. only damage he got was done by him self getting hooked up on his teeth, he would smash anything once daylight broke through on him. he was a good mix, would sing all day till you got to him and mix it for real at the end. as for saying looks and scars make a good stud dog ,then by the look of mine all them years back he must of looked gay.
