I think that stillwaters have a much higher chance of throwing an eeel over 5lb. Big eels are something i tend not to associate with flowing water

the river test and waters around the christchurch/new forest area are full of huge eels, chancing of getting access to fish them-zilch,i even have 2 river keeper friends down there!:cry:

correct me if im wrong but im sure the british record comes from that area.think the biggest ive had is around 4-5lb form the thames

Got to agree with j darcy. An old boy who i go fishing with now and again[83] caught one weighing just over 6lb at sandbeck lakes in south yorks he was fishing for carp at the time and caught it on a squid flavoured boilie wat pissed me off the bailif wanted him to kill it funny how it slipped out of his hand streight back into the lake.atvb

it was 11 lb and caught by accident. i think it was someone fishing for carp at Ringwood in Hampshire. But i heard about one even bigger but not sure if it is the official record. Note, nearly all the big eels on record are from stillwater.....

You just need a mate who works for Orvis ;)

The real biggies were in some of the trout farms, but nobody in their right mind would let you dangle a line in their stew ponds.

I remember being at TVT farm on the Itchen and just watching these massive eels swimming around the bottom of some of the pools and knowing we could never fish for them. Fat on a ready diet of pellet and dead trout.

they go to the Sargasso Sea mate. Spawn. Then their young come back here. The real big eels will, not have developed the breeding urge, they just eat and eat.....but eels grow slowly..... ;)

cheers mate ,thats probs why there,s that many in that weir pool i was on about ,the weir is about 15ft with solid concrete walls both sides ,with the canal running over the top ,nothing goe,s any further salmon, sea trout and eels by the looks of it ,i know eels will travel over land but it would be hard for them to get round all that and then back into the river ,i would have thought :)

The river here in Bedfordshire hold alot of eels.

Back in the 90's i remember the italians and polish having competions at night. They would use 40lb line size 2 hook's and pull them out.

Last year a friend and I caught 22 of the things 2lb plus whilst fishing for bream and tench.

:D
