177 for rabbits

Recommended Posts

ive just started using a .177 for rabbits with an s400 , seems ok , drops everything it hits with a head shot .

i still have the .22 for other stuff as you cant beat something hard hitting , would be even tempted to go .25 or bigger :)

Norway won the Euro crap last night, never saw it and never will, but I'd gladly display the difference between .177 and .22 on the contestants for the whole feckin world to see  guess that would be domed as it would have more of a point :drink:

Thought it was a fair question, didnt want to open a can of worms  just wanted some objective opinnions as ive just been offered a rapid in 177 and am tempted but have no experiance with the smaller calibre, didnt know it had been done to death before, if i wanted bitchiness i'd use some of the other hunting forums out there. (The joys of the internet i suppose) Thanks to those who gave advice.

Cheer up adam its not meant in a bad way, just a bit of banter. If you had had a look in the older posts you would have found out, that 25% of air rifle forum is based on 2 questions a: The old .177 versus .22 and b: what pellet, domed or pointed. So I hope you forgive the ones that have answered this one a hundred times over and just have a bit of a laff along the way. Its nothing personal.

Happy hunting

i spose its like whos better beatles or rolling stones or blur oasis ,summet like that ,itll go on forever !!!

Its not just beating the old horse to death in this case, its prodding around with a stick in the decomposed puddle that's left over of the poor animal. But this one will come up every week or so.

No offence adam

I've tried both .177, .20, and .22 over the years and always gone back to .22 because my main quarry is rabbit.

The main reason why I prefer the .22 is that I often shoot in 'long grassed' areas and I found that the little .177 was more easily deflected by vegitation and wind.

In terms of "Smackdown" power the .22 wins every time and rabbits (less the few that shook their heads and ran off) once hit, normally stay hit or are slowed down enough for a follow up shot.

.20 was an interesting experiment in a springer but again I found it light and not enough choice of pellet to cope with the various venues I shoot in i.e. Barns, rat and bird(wad cutters), and rabbit(semi domed).

For target shooting the .177 flys faster and flatter buts lets face it the majority of folk here shoot prey and not a shiny florescent disk that never moves and is handily 40ish mm across (dead useful for mildot ranging).

Our targets are often obscured, knows you're there, and moves faster than lightning if it hears or sees you so it's all down to smackability in the end.

As for the debate on head or centre mass shots, the best sight pattern wins. Head by choice but side chest if I can see the full picture. I,ve lost a few rabbit from bouncing pellets off their heads and unfortunatley a few got away with chest shots  . Such is life and anyone who says that they always drop prey one shot one kill every time is either incredibly skilled and / or lucky and could they please give me the numbers of the next lottery draw. ;);)

WHAT!!! less the few that shook their heads and ran off ..you mean you missed

Nope. Like you do, I've missed loads of shots and most likely will miss a shed load more. The point is that some of what I hit didn't go down and disapeared down holes with a pellet inside them. THATS the point :wallbash:

the general concesous says heavey pellets in a pcp and light pellets in springers.. but........... there's always going to be the odd exseption, and of course some one who takes to a certain set up and who'll get shit hot with it.

a rabbit brains about the size of a wall nut, the hearts about the size of a pea, so dunt take rocket science to realise a head shots easier.

bod shots in .177 in legal limit guns i have to admit 30 yards in the heart is pushing it a bit, but with heads i've taken them to 55 yards no problem even at 10.5 fp's.(was a heavey pellet) but penatration definatly wasnt a problem lol.

regarding accuracy, two guys actualy logged an article out with recorded facts, .177 v .22, the .22 was 'marginaly' better in the wind at distance (50 yard stuff) but it was a nats bollock lol.... the down side was the dropwas more severe and harder to judge (aparently).

i've used one .22 gun and had succes with it out to 50 yards, after that the group did spread stupidly after 50, at 55 was pissing in the wind, alas that wasnt the caliber it was the gun/pellet combo.

with JSB heavies i shoot to 82 yards on small 1 inch to 1/2 inch bricks and hit consistantly when i'm hot and 50/50 when i'm not off a stool and sat cumfy... first point is it is the pellet!! some are literaly accurate to a set range (30..40..50....82 lol), it isnt till you settle into your stride that it suddenly dawns on you.... it's the pellet and gun. (like i was gettng 2 fps varience on a very steady power curve....at 5 fps varience at 50 meters i did manage to settle into hitting the edge of a coin, yup the edge! 3 out og 5 times with one pellet, 1 maybe 2 times with another pellet...)

now to penatration 'tests' on a hard surface like wood we point blanked .22's with .177's, the .17 went three quarts through, the .22's only went a pellet depth but cracked the wood. heres the clincher, on soft materials the depths change... i've only read it but on putty a .22 goes a little bit deeper than a .177.... so it's horses for courses how much hard material you hit verses soft tissue....

half dozen of one.. 6 of the other

on ratting............... .22 does an imprseive head shot, does a really shit body shot, where as bod shots were one hit kills in .177, so basically my average opertunity of a shot was a lot higher in .177.

the main down fall was rats jumping the .22 pellet.. that might jut be why the other question ''why do rats run off in .22''... i found it out by leaving the safety catch on, as i squeezed at the locked trigger the rat stamps on the floor and bowls over screaming!!! hell of a good impact??? NO.. the f****r did it twice in 2 seconds.. no pellet fired.

another was pulling it's head out the way at like 7- 8 yards...(you xan see he pellets on NV gogs lol...)

so......... makes no odds, both calibers are good enough.. ones too slow one over penatrates with the heavier pellets lol. both kill's small rodents effectivly.

more .17 pellets in a tub so cheaper, but fiddly for cumbersome fingers........

.22 get a few more shots on a fill on a pcp.

the rest is..what yu like.

missed abit... how far do you want to go... without putting in a lot of proper home work and practace you'll (usualy..) not be good enough to hit acurate at stuff past the 40 yard mark.. so the manufacturers come up with fraises like ' you dont need the pellet to be that accurate'.. presumptous twats like...

are you shooting to 30 yards and the preverbial 2p size? any crap will hit a few times ot of ten.. or are you weighing sizing pellet and tuning the gun, putting in hours of pure concentration? all that with decent pellets that match the barrel? wheres your dial in list? or your hold over pattern?

at 30 yards a 25 yard zero on a medium .22 pellet's plenty...3/4 inch split above and below verses a 28 yard zero on a average weight .177 pellet for half inch hold over/under? the rest before and after the the 8 yard to 32/34 yard 'on the half inch cross hair is a drop any way....

shooting off the cross hair out to the 50-55 is a wee bit diferent, .177 can be too close to gues for some, the sme as .22 can be too far for others, so again, the advantage is down to the individual....what suits you.

some one finaly posted a while ago..(when everything went to legal limit airguns)

' the old guns were literaly sold as.. no tune up less you were rich etc, so .177's came in at 9fp's (ish) .22's at 10.5 fp's... .177 for target and .22 for hunting............'

today you can ask at the shop to get the nearest to a certian leval, that tunes to a pellet for better concistancy, the accuracy is way better today...way better, new barrels new material better enginering. a lot of guns with the right pellet and tune up will 'out shoot' the user...........so the distances that are resonably further and for the extreme of the better shooters a shit load further.

30 yards is a zero range... mines 33 on a heavey pellet, on AA's its 38 yards..... to zero your trying to hit in the same pellet hole, the rest about one inch groups for a zero is proper bull shit....

im not tryeing to start a argument or saying i know more or anythink like that but ive always read and been taught try and use a heavy pellet in a springer and a lighter one in a pcp.. you have givin me a idea now might have to do some highley scientific test in my shed with the yellow pages and a few diffent pellets.happy hunting mate
