Although it can be legal to shoot Muntjac with a shotgun, they are very tough little deer, and,he should really try to get a proper stalker in to do the business for him,I am sure that he wouldn't have any trouble getting someone to pay for the priviledge. It is,unfortunately a fact that a lot of stalkers are shooting these small deer only to find that they have been peppered with shot,so,in my opinion it isn't really the way to go...............Martin.

got to agree with you there martin, far too easy to injure a munty with a shotgun. there will be plenty of people willing to help out and pay. your on a win win situation. ;)

By law you can use AAA shot from a 12g or larger shotgun for the protection of your crops from deer damage, but it would be far better to get a stalker in to clear them for you. Far less chance of wounding and less carcass damage! They are very good eating!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Contact your local branch of the BASC or the BDS if no one on here snaps your hand off :bye:

Sorry but you'd be a prick to shoot any deer with a shotgun.

IDIOTIC...............

Even with a rifled slug? A blanket statement like that is just wrong and ill informed  Many hundreds of boar and deer are shot on the continent with slug and flechette, in the states too. It would be just as effective here.

there are not used to being shot at and nobody hunts them. you can quite easily get within 30 yards of them, with with AAA shot (what the gunshop owner reccomended) you could kill one humaely. my friend has bee on a many shoots and he is a god shot and can hit high birds at 40 yards above him

When my uncle was a game keeper we used to have one drive where loads of muntjack always used to be flushed from so oonce a year we did a driven deer shoot, they can be done humanely with a shotgun, but as its been said a rifle is a far surerway of doing it...less meat damage as well.

some years back must admit.

12g AAA is the minimum legal "shot" that can be used on deer in England/Wales, I believe it's the same for the rest of UK but not sure! It is very capable of stopping the right deer at the right distance, but there are very few instances when it is the tool of choice, without doubt the appropriate rifle is the best option in the vast majority of situations...not least because AAA put too many holes in the carcase!!

Shotguns for deer FFS.This is the 21st century ,not the dark ages .Deer deserve better than that .Seen too much wounding to ever except the shooting of deer with a shotgun .Get someone to do the job propper or leave them in peace .

Are they really causing damage or is it just an excuse to shoot them ?.Get some pics up of the damage please !.

And who has rifled slugs ?

I'm wrong and ill informed am I?

If shooting deer with shotguns is such a great idea why do neither the BDS or Forestry Commission or even BASC for that matter endorse it?

We're not talking about the states or Europe are we !!

Deer deserve better and if you're a sportsman and countryman rather than a "shooter" ( there's a big f*****g difference) you'd know that.

Muntjac are talked about like they're pests like rats ! They deserve RESPECT :wallbash:

Oh I do love a bigot :clapper: Yes there are people who use slugs in the UK, not many I will grant you, but they are dammed effective. The Government do not like the idea of rifles slugs being freely available and have put pressure on the shooting organisations to toe the party line! They do stop boar and deer extemely well.

If you want an honest opinion on how effective they are go and talk to George Wallace at the NGO stands at the country fairs this year, you might learn something. Mind you, that would need an open mind :tongue2:

I do not want the proposed ban on using shotguns on deer to go through. I think the law is quite clear enough at the moment. If you want to be a turkey voting for Christmas, be my guest. I think we are restricted enough with draconian laws. obviously you do not.

I do not shoot deer with a shotgun, I use my rifle thanks. I was brought up in the country, have worked in the country and enjoyed country sports all my life, and was brought up to respect my quarry and other people. "Pricks" (to use your word) like you make the last part very hard. The lad is only talking about obeying the law, for you to be so offensive shows a lack of understanding and tact which is breathtaking :feck:

What about dense woodland, humane despatch, etc, there are without doubt times when it is prudent, effective, humane and appropriate, although I'll grant you not very often!
