Lets See Your Borders !!!

Recommended Posts

Why isn't there more working borders out there. I mean if they are keen to their jobs like the others, why so few. Look like good working coats and strong heads on most of them. Just a yank looking for answers. You don't see any here.

i,ll tellyou why rolly, far too many dicks, set on breeding crap, i love me borders, they can take their time comiing on and a lot of lads these days dont have the patience . fortunately there are the chosen few who keep and work the little otter heads, and long mat they reign.

I hope those few, continue on with breeding more good workers. Good lookin dogs all.

So some are saying they take a bit to come on others are say they will go earlier. When do they generally turn on? I know personally, I'd much rather have a dog, regardless of breed, wanting to go at 6months, and have to hold it back, than wait until 18months hoping they'll start. Rodsmith said his started at 9months and that sounds like about any other hunt-driven, well bred pup. Was his a exception, or the rule?

there are no rules, just common sense and sensability, fair enough if your dog come on early, but 6mths in my mind is to early to ground, anyone thinking of that has no respect for his dogs well being or quarry and shouln,t even think of calling himself a dogman.

It is nice to see lads talk about working borders and not putting them down I wonder if Dave Harcombe carried on with his borders all those years ago that you would see more working borders Dave has had a great influence on working terriers and I am sure that if Dave had carried on breeding them he would of write more about them and alot more terrier men might have used them.I think we all are influenced by what is written especially up and coming young lads.Just before Dave changed to Patterdales he was offered a few working borders from Levi Oakes working line of borders. But Dave refused and stuck with the patterdales I think if he had stayed with the borders it would have made a great difference to the working border.

well i suppose all we can do really, is try and keep our lines we have true to the workers we keep , i know several lads that have gone down the money road and professed all working blood and it turns out to be bull, we are not in the safest predicament in the hunting world,im of the mind of ,if i cant work my dogs then stuff i wont breed for the sake of it, and when i do, it has to be workers everytime.and i have to agree with you ,breeder there probadly would have been more working borders about if dave had kept them, i think its time to send anarticle to EDRD about them, , its about time we had some decent threads on here instead of arguing,

i think thats why alot of people dont use borders as they read to many book to see whats in at the moment the way i look at it.the 1st borders i seen was when i was 9yrs old and i thought what a smart pair of terriers they were and they have stuck with me ever since lads not because of books.there was a good man from wales called geff fellorony who had good borders in and they were hard and it was a breed he liked,i think if you like the breed you should try it not go on what people say or write about.i dont mean this in a nasty way its just my opinion

I hope you didn't take it like I start digging with pups at 6months old....I was saying I'd RATHER see a dog that WANTS to start at 6 months, and have to HOLD them back, than wait forever to see if they have a digging bone in their body. I give pups plenty of time to mature and they go when they are ready, but I won't wait forever. I agree that starting them off digging at 6 months is TOO early.

not at all nate, it is right people will get influenced by books, terriers seem to go in a fashion, i have heard of jeff but no very little about him, goin back to what you read and influence, there are certain authors out there that are calling the fashion and it seems patterdales or blackfells are in at the moment, borders are not everyones cup of tea, and im certainly no expert on them, just love their way and the way they hunt their different, and if im right the book "breaking through",covers a good bit on them, not that ive seen a copy, would like one if its still about. follow your own mind about a dog, i can remember an old mate of mine having aborder dog that was 16mths before it showed any interest at all, then one glorious hunting morning, he followed one in to an earth and pete was digging for four hours and when he broke through, the dog had killed a vixen and was promply getting in to the dog and he never looked back, my own dog came on at 14mths , we had a dog in that was fekking about a blackone at that and a seasoned dog, he would,nt stick, in went the border and two hours later we broke in to him and one dead charlie, he,s now fathered my pups and all i can hope is they do the same, they be bought on the right way, and the rest is up to old "nimrod".
